After bidding farewell to the Raichand family, Aradhya, Aarav, and Atharva stepped out into the cool night air. The tension of the evening had melted away, replaced by a quiet sense of accomplishment and warmth. Aarav clung to Atharva's hand, his eyes drooping with sleep as they made their way to Atharva's sleek black SUV. Aradhya's heart felt lighter than it had in a long time, but that would soon change.

The drive back to Aradhya's modest apartment was mostly silent. Aarav, curled up in the back seat, drifted into a peaceful slumber, his tiny hand clutching the sleeve of Atharva's jacket. Aradhya glanced at Atharva, who kept his eyes focused on the road, his profile illuminated by the faint streetlights.

"Thank you for tonight," Aradhya said softly, breaking the silence. "It meant a lot, not just to me, but to Aarav as well. He felt comfortable with your family."

Atharva gave a small smile, his usual sharp demeanor softened. "It was important for them to meet you both. I could see they liked you, Aradhya. You and Aarav already have a place in our lives, whether you realize it or not."

Aradhya's heart fluttered at his words, but she quickly reminded herself of the distance she had to maintain. She had built walls over the years—walls that protected her from hurt and disappointment. Still, Atharva's words and the kindness of his family had chipped away at those defenses.

They arrived at her apartment, and Atharva helped her carry a sleeping Aarav inside. After tucking him into bed, Atharva lingered for a moment at the door.

"If you need anything, Aradhya, don't hesitate to call me," he said, his voice low and sincere. "You're not alone anymore."

Aradhya gave a nod, her emotions swirling. "Goodnight, Atharva."

"Goodnight, Aradhya."

The door closed, and Aradhya stood there for a moment, staring at the wooden panel before letting out a long breath. She hadn't realized how much hope and warmth she had allowed herself to feel that evening, and it was frightening. With a deep sigh, she walked to her bedroom, ready to rest.

The next morning, Aradhya's phone buzzed on the kitchen counter as she made breakfast for Aarav. She glanced at the screen, seeing a message from her part-time employer. A sinking feeling settled in her stomach as she unlocked her phone and opened the message.

Dear Aradhya,

We regret to inform you that due to budget constraints and recent changes in company operations, we will no longer be able to retain your services. We appreciate your work with us and hope to reconnect in the future under better circumstances.

Best regards,
Management

Aradhya stared at the screen, her heart pounding in her chest. She blinked, reading the message again, as if somehow it would change. The weight of those words pressed down on her, threatening to suffocate her. She had lost one of her part-time jobs—the one that had been her main source of income. The one she relied on to pay rent and buy necessities for Aarav.

She felt her knees weaken, and she leaned against the kitchen counter for support. Her mind raced, calculating the bills that were due, the groceries she needed to buy, and other expenses. How was she going to manage?

"Mumma, I hungwy!" Aarav's voice pulled her out of her spiraling thoughts. She forced a smile, turning to her little boy, who was sitting at the table, waiting for his breakfast.

"Coming, sweetheart," she said, her voice shaky as she placed a plate of toast in front of him. Aarav, oblivious to the storm brewing inside his mother, happily munched on his food.

Aradhya sat across from him, her appetite gone. She had always managed, no matter how hard life got. But this—this felt like too much. Her eyes stung with unshed tears, but she blinked them away. She couldn't afford to break down. Not now. Not ever.
