The soft morning light filtered into the rooms of the house, enveloping everything in a calming tranquility. The sun was rising over New York, and I could feel the freshness of the day. The house was busier than the night before. Staff were finishing up organizing boxes and placing each piece of furniture in its proper place.
I was in the kitchen, sipping my coffee when my mother entered, looking radiant. Emily Fontaine always had a delicate way of handling everything. Even amid the chaos of a move, she managed to maintain her serenity. Her sense of order and organization was unparalleled, and I admired how she always seemed to have everything under control.
"You slept well?" she asked, her voice as sweet as ever.
"Yes, Mom," I replied with a smile. "It's nice to be back."
My father, Antonie, was in his officer, as usual. He had a more serious demeanor, a firm presence, but always gentle with all of us. His eyes, however, always seemed focused on the next challenge. He was the pillar of the family, the one who always knew what to do in any situation. Even without saying a word, we knew we could count on him.
As we finished our coffee, my siblings began to trickle into the kitchen, one by one.
Adrien, the oldest, was always full of confidence and energy. He had that natural leadership spirit, something I had always admired.
Bernard appeared shortly after, with his usual playful demeanor. He always seemed to have a joke ready, bringing lightness to the atmosphere.
Claude, on the other hand, was more introspective, preferring to observe rather than speak, but when he did, his words carried more weight.
And then Dominique, my twin, came in last. He was the person I shared the most secrets with, and there was something comforting about knowing that, despite our differences, he was always by my side.
"You heard?" Adrien asked, breaking the silence. "The Knights are coming for dinner tonight."
My ears perked up immediately upon hearing the name Knight. It was the first time we would see them since returning to New York. Mr. Thomas Knight was a respected businessman and a long-time friend of my father. His wife, Emma, was known for her elegance and impeccable demeanor. And they had a son, someone I hadn't seen in a long time.
"The Knights?" I asked, trying to sound casual as I set the table for breakfast. "It's been ages... It'll be interesting to see them again."
There was a certain mystery surrounding that family. I remembered brief encounters from childhood before we moved to Paris. Though my memories were a bit hazy, the idea of reuniting with them made me slightly nervous but also curious. How had they changed? What would the dynamic between us be like now?
"What should we wear?" Bernard asked, his eyes sparkling. "I bet it's going to be something very formal."
Mom laughed. "Nothing too formal, dear. It's just a dinner among long-time friends."
