2018:

The sky darkened, and the rain came down in heavy sheets, drenching the schoolyard. Under the shelter of the old school building, two girls stood side by side, watching the downpour. Their eyes met, sharing a moment of silent understanding—neither had an umbrella.

"Danielle Marsh," Haerin called out dramatically, stepping forward with a playful grin, "Are you ready to get drenched with me in this rain?"

Her tone was teasing, but there was an underlying warmth, a sense of something more in the gesture. She extended her hand toward Dani, bending slightly as though she were a prince offering a proposal to a fair maiden. Dani giggled, her heart fluttering at the sight of her best friend acting so silly, yet so charming. Without hesitation, Dani placed her hand in Haerin's, her movements deliberate, elegant, as though she were a princess accepting a royal offer.

"Yes," Dani whispered, and Haerin's face lit up with a wide grin, one that could rival the sun if it hadn't been hidden behind the dark storm clouds.

Without another word, they took off running, hand in hand, into the rain. The cold droplets soaked them almost immediately, their uniforms clinging to their bodies, but neither cared. They laughed, their giggles filling the air as they splashed through puddles, racing through the deserted streets toward Dani's house. Their shoes squelched with every step, and their hair stuck to their faces, but it only made them laugh harder.

"Wohoo!" Haerin shouted, looking up toward the sky, letting the rain pour down on her face, her arms stretched wide as if she were embracing the world.

Dani glanced over at her best friend, her heart swelling with affection. Haerin looked so free, so alive, her face glowing with joy despite the gloom around them. Dani couldn't help but smile, a wide, loving smile that she couldn't suppress. She realized, in that moment, just how deeply she cared for Haerin.

But her moment of admiration was cut short when she noticed a motorbike speeding toward her out of the corner of her eye. Panic surged through her, but before she could react, Haerin's strong grip yanked her back, pulling her safely out of the way. Dani collided into Haerin, her heart racing from the shock of the near-miss.

Their faces were so close now, mere inches apart. Dani could feel Haerin's breath, warm and soft against her cheek. Haerin's eyes, once playful and carefree, were now intense, filled with concern.

"You should be more careful," Haerin murmured, her voice low, her gaze flickering between Dani's eyes and her lips.

Dani's heart pounded in her chest, not from fear, but from something else entirely. Her breath hitched, and a shiver ran down her spine. She didn't have time to think, didn't want to think. Haerin's face was so close now, closer than ever before.

And then, without another word, Haerin leaned in. Dani's eyes fluttered shut just as their lips met, soft and hesitant. It was their first kiss—innocent, sweet, and drenched in rain. The world seemed to stop for that brief moment, the only sound the gentle patter of rain against the pavement, as if the universe itself was holding its breath for them.

2024:

The grand ballroom of the Kang Mansion was bathed in a soft, golden glow, the light from the massive chandelier casting a warm hue over the sea of elegantly dressed guests. The chatter of wealthy businessmen, politicians, and celebrities filled the air, but all attention turned toward the grand staircase as the lights dimmed, and a single spotlight illuminated the top of the stairs.
