You made sure to do just as Rafe said when you got home. As soon as you had helped your mother put the groceries away, you went off to your bedroom, wrote the number on your arm on a small piece of paper, and hid it in your undergarment drawer before scrubbing the ink off of your skin afterward.

Your mother had no clue that you had hitched a ride with a man that you had only just met that day in the grocery store nor did she know you even talked to a man in the grocery store. That evening, you showered and got into a long nightgown before going out to the living room to watch one of the shows you could while you waited for your mother to fall asleep.

You heard the television in your mother's room turn off after some time. You figured she'd fallen asleep but you didn't want to assume so you quietly walked down the hall and peeked through the crack of her bedroom door to see her completely knocked out.

You let out a small glad sigh before you crept into your bedroom and grabbed the small slip of paper, bringing it with you as you quietly went back into the living room where the television continued to lowly play the show you were previously watching. You went over to the rotary phone that was situated on a small table in the living room. You dialed the number on the slip and held the phone up to your ear as you waited for Rafe to pick up.

Moments later, you heard the ringing go silent and the sound of the familiar man's voice. "Y/n?" He spoke, wanting to make sure it was you.

"Yes.." You quietly said.

"I was waiting for your call." He said.

"I was waiting for my mother to fall asleep." You explained, continuing to speak in a low voice as not to awaken your mother.

"She's asleep now, though?" Rafe questioned.

"Yes." You answered.

"Good." Rafe said. "I haven't stopped thinking about you, doll."

Your breath hitched, "Me neither." You softly admitted.

"Let me see you tomorrow after I get out of work." Rafe then said.

"Where would we go?" You questioned.

He's silent for a few moments, "I'll pick you up and we could go somewhere outside of town. There's a diner right outside of town that I can take you to. It's not far and there won't be anyone we know there." He suggests. "Would you like that?"

"But... you said it's scary out there." You told him.

"Yeah, I said it's dangerous out there for a girl like you to be alone. You'll have me. I told you I'd protect you if anything were to happen." Rafe said. "It'll be fine."

"We'd have to go after my mother falls asleep." You tell him.

"When does she usually go to sleep?" Rafe then asks.

You think for a moment, "Well, on weekdays.. around nine.. nine-thirty."

"Then, I'll pick you up at ten and we'll go. It's a 24/7 diner." Rafe said.

"You shouldn't have to wait that long for dinner." You started.

"It's fine, doll. Really. I'll hold out." Rafe told you.

"But, what if I'm not hungry? I'll still have to eat dinner with my mother." I said.

He let out a slight chuckle, "Eat dinner with your mother. If you're still hungry, I'll order you some food. If not, you can get a dessert. How's that sound?"

You smiled a little, feeling better, "Good."

"You worry too much, darlin'." Rafe said. It was already clear to him that you were that kind of person.
