The next evening, once your mother had fallen asleep, you grabbed the small sheet of paper hidden in your undergarments drawer, and went to the rotary phone in your living room, dialing the number before awaiting the sound of Rafe's voice.
"Y/n?" You heard on the other side of the line.
"Hi, Rafe." You softly said, letting him know it was you.
"How was your day, doll?" He asked.
"Good. I baked some cookies today while my mother was at work." You told him.
"Oh, yeah?" Rafe said. "What kind?" He then asked.
"Chocolate chip." You answered.
"Well, I bet they're delicious." He said.
"I can bring you some when we see each other again." You then suggested.
"I'd like that a lot, doll." Rafe softly told you.
"When are we going to see each other again?" You then questioned.
"I'm going to be busy the next few days but how about this Saturday? You could come over to my place and we could watch a movie. What do you think, sweets?" Rafe suggested, awaiting your answer as he sat on his couch, a cigarette in his hold in his empty hand while the other held the phone up to his ear.
"I'd like that." You told him, smiling to yourself at the thought. Suddenly, your mind went to a bad place. A place you didn't like to be. You thought back to the talk about reproduction in marriage in Catholic school. How some people might try and do that with you just for fun and how that was a sin. How you had to be married in order for God to accept it. "Wait... um, just a movie, right?" You then asked.
He found himself smiling because he could tell exactly what you were thinking and why you were asking that. "Just a movie." He confirmed.
"Okay." You smiled, letting out a slight sigh of relief. "I can't wait." You told him.
"Me neither, doll. I'm going to miss you these next few days." He told you before taking a drag of his cigarette.
"Me too." You agreed. "Will we be able to at least call?" You then asked.
"No, doll. 'm sorry." Rafe said. That was a lie, though. He was going to be busy, that wasn't a lie. He just wasn't busy to the point that he wasn't able to call you, even, just for a few minutes before bed. He was doing this on purpose. He wanted to see how you felt about him after not seeing him for a few days. How you'd act on Saturday evening.
"It's okay, Rafe. You can't control that." You softly said, though you were feeling a little disappointed, you didn't want to make him feel bad for that.
"I'll miss you, sweetheart." He told you.
"Me too." You said, and you meant that. You were somehow already growing attached to him after only a few days of knowing him.
"Get some rest, doll. It's late." Rafe told you.
"What's your address?" You quickly asked, thinking you'd have to walk to his place.
"You don't have to worry about that. I'll pick you up at ten." Rafe told you.
"You don't have to. I can walk." You softly told him, feeling a little bad for making him go out of the way for that.
"I don't want you walking outside late at night like that. You never know who's out there." Rafe warned you.
He was right. It would be dangerous for you to do such a thing, even in such a small and close-knit town like yours. Especially in such a small and close-knit town like yours.
