The trees seemed to close in on Lilith as she ran, their jagged branches clawing at her skin like skeletal hands. The thick fog wove between the trunks, coiling around her legs as if the forest itself were trying to drag her back into the darkness she was fleeing from. Every breath burned in her throat, the cold night air biting at her exposed skin, but she couldn’t stop. She couldn’t look back.
The footsteps were getting closer.
They were quiet at first—soft, deliberate, like a hunter stalking its prey—but now they had become something more. Heavier. Louder. Each step sent a pulse of terror through Lilith’s chest, reminding her that whatever was chasing her wasn’t far behind. It was coming for her, and it was relentless.
Her heart pounded in her ears as she darted between the trees, her footfalls muffled by the damp earth. The forest was a labyrinth of twisted roots and shadows, each one more menacing than the last. She could feel the eyes of the woods on her, could hear the faint whispers carried on the wind, but she didn’t dare slow down.
Don’t stop. Don’t look back.
Lilith had no idea where she was going. The path had disappeared in the fog, leaving her with nothing but instinct to guide her. The deeper she ran into the forest, the darker it became, the trees growing denser, more twisted, their branches reaching out like gnarled fingers. The cold gnawed at her bones, and her breath came in ragged gasps, each one a struggle to keep moving.
Suddenly, the ground beneath her gave way. She let out a cry as her foot caught on a root, sending her tumbling down a steep incline. Her body crashed through the underbrush, the branches tearing at her clothes and skin as she fell. She hit the ground hard, the impact knocking the wind out of her lungs.
For a moment, everything was still. The world spun around her, her vision blurring as pain radiated through her limbs. The fog curled around her like a shroud, cold and suffocating, as if the forest itself were closing in. She could hear the blood rushing in her ears, the rapid thud of her heartbeat, and for a second, she thought—maybe they’ve lost me.
But then she heard it.
A faint rustling in the distance. A low, guttural sound, like the dragging of something heavy through the underbrush. Lilith’s heart skipped a beat, her breath catching in her throat.
They’re still here.
She scrambled to her feet, ignoring the sharp pain in her ankle as she pushed herself up. The fog was thicker now, swallowing the trees, but through the haze, she could just make out a figure. Tall. Lanky. Standing unnaturally still at the edge of her vision. It didn’t move, didn’t make a sound, but she knew it was watching her.
A cold chill ran down her spine. The figure wasn’t human. It couldn’t be. There was something wrong about it—something that twisted her stomach in knots and made the air around her feel heavy, oppressive. The fog seemed to cling to its form, obscuring its features, but she could see its head tilt ever so slightly, as if it were curious.
Lilith took a step back, her breath coming in its silhouette blending into the fog like a shadow cast by something far darker than the night. A cold sweat broke out across Lilith’s skin, her mind screaming at her to move, but her body felt frozen, trapped in the thick, suffocating tension that filled the air.
Then, the figure shifted.
It took one slow, deliberate step forward, its footfall silent on the forest floor. The movement was wrong—unnatural—like a puppet being yanked by invisible strings. Its limbs were too long, its posture too stiff. As it moved closer, the fog curled around its form, clinging to it like a veil of death.
