•GERARD's POV••
Declan, Ronaldo and I busied ourselves attending to the chores around the ranch with the aid of my farmhands. We fixed a pipe that had began to leak, installed a new irrigation system to water the crops, cleaned out the stalls, groomed the horses in the stable, lassoed cattle, feed the livestock and several other chores. By mid-morning all major tasks had been completed and by midday everything else.
I saw the familiar truck roll into the land. It was the Millions again. Jenna who took the wheel this time around and would have run right into me. Had it not been for her brother's quick reflexes, I might have suffered a few ghastly injures.
Jonah immediately killed the engine hopping out of the truck greeting everyone as he did.
"Don't ever let her take the wheel. She almost ran me over." I grunted as Jenna's older brother walked over to me.
"Hi Gerard," Jenna followed beaming like a little girl who just received her first puppy.
"Jenna." I nodded and held the urge to roll my eyes. Her eyes were exploring all over my body in an open way. Jonah noticed as there was an awkward silence that followed before he walked his sister back over to my brothers and the farmhands who stood beside their truck.
On his way back Jonah gave Declan the keys to the truck saying something I couldn't hear much to her dismay. Declan and Jenna didn't get along well for as long as they knew each other. Declan chuckled at her predicament while Jenna rolled her eyes folded her arms below her bust when they'd been clutched in his hand.
Jonah reached me in a few strides before pulling us further away from their earshot to have a word.
He was normally the jovial -jokester - class clown type so my curiosity piqued as I observed his current behaviour which was in stark contrast.
"Didn't you hear?" Jonah whisper-spoke feverishly.
"Didn't I hear what?" Upon closer inspection I was more concerned than anything else. "Joe is everything alright ... you look a little tense."
"I'm fine. Something happened at the diner. Everyone is spooked." What? Reilly ...
Not a second passed when I made it over to my truck in a few strides. Jonah was hot on my heel apparently coming along for the ride.
"Gerard are you alright man you looked red." Jonah said and I rolled my eyes.
"Do you know exactly what happened?" I started the engine before pulling up beside where Declan, Ronaldo, Jenna and my farmhands congregated.
"No," he said breathily.
"Dec you're in charge while we're gone you know what to do." Declan nodded acknowledging my remark while winking at Jenna who growled her own reply.
It was not long before we finally got on the road. Jonah strapped down the seat belt and held on to the dashboard while I've took the wheel making Jenna's driving look like Christmas pie.
"Slow down dammit." Jonah said in exasperation. "You're gonna kill us."
I didn't pay him any mind. Something happened at Ruby's. Reilly worked there. In fact, it was her first day back. I found it very odd that the day she returned something had occurred. It couldn't be a coincidence.
It took a lot longer than I'd expected to pull up outside of the diner. Had it not been for pedestrians, the occasionally old lady crossing the road, stray cats making me pull to a halt and Jonah's feminine cries I would've been there a lot sooner.
As the truck pulled to a stop beside the rode, he opened the door running to the nearby bin to empty the contents of his stomach.
Meanwhile, I opened the door becoming alert to the fact that their was police parked outside as well as an ambulance. I spotted Maleek amongst them he was talking to Reilly who sat in the ambulance.
Oh thank God. I jogged over to them enveloping her in my arms almost crushing her small body.
"What happened?" I glanced at Maleek who finished up writing his notes.
"Turner!" Was all he said, but I got the message.
Charlie emerged from the diner just in time to catch my eyes. He shuffled down the small flight of steps adding to our assembly a little while before Jonah did.
"The guy is a lunatic Gerard. It's Ruby's who'd do that?"
"Baby?" Her head was pressed against my chest. My hands cupped her cheeks so that I stared into those honey eyes that were now moist with unshed tears.
Damn! It was the worst feeling in the world, seeing tears in those beautiful eyes and knowing that I had some part to play in it being there.
You see ... if I had not been so stubborn and brought her home with me that day months ago she wouldn't be facing this unfortunate situation. On the other hand, I couldn't have left her there having an idea of what might come of her innocence. Even if I had I wouldn't be able to forgive myself knowing what I know now.
"Are you alright?" Even though I knew she wasn't, at the moment I kind of wanted her to lie to me and tell me she was because if she'd said anything else the urge to pummel him - no worst, kill him - would expound.
Reilly shook her head yes before placing it on my shoulder. Instinctively, my hand combed it's way through her soft shoulder length hair. I couldn't fathom why I've have not done so before because it felt like soft kisses on my fingers.
Suddenly, something caught my eye. There was a gash just below her chin. I tilted her head more so that I could see observe and instantly, my blood began to boil.
"That bastard." I grunted I scanned our group and my eyes landed on Charlie. "Get her to Red Ranch and stay with her. Don't let her leave your sights."
"Gerard don't do it man." Maleek tried.
Charlie took her in his arms and I matched over to the truck getting in slamming the door beside me. My hands made fists around the stirring wheel and for a slip second I imagine it being that bastard's neck. I tried to calm myself.
Just then the door opened beside me and in popped Jonah. He shot the door strapping down to the seat.
"I must be a fool to get back in this truck with you." He said just as the truck roared to life.
I grunted my reply before pulling out into the road. I'd made it a great distance before I heard a siren sound momentarily. The plates told me that Maleek was behind us.
"Just like ole times huh?" Jonah managed while controlling his breathing.
"Just like ole times." I replied before stepping on the gas.
