Not So Secure - Chapter 9

Kaldur rushed out of the interrogation room at the alert, heading straight for the medical bay. He made it to the room just as Megan and Artemis came rushing around the corner, receiving the same alert. The emergency lockdown was triggered and both Superboy and Kid Flash were trapped inside.

Kaldur ran up to the door and tried to scan his way in, but he was met with an 'Aqualad - access denied, Lockdown procedure in progress.' He then activated his water blades and tried to slice through the magnetic locking system... to no avail. He succeeded only in leaving a few deep gashes on the metal.

Artemis stepped forward, pulling out an explosive arrow and readying to fire it. "Out of the way."

Suddenly, there was a loud, resounding bang as a Superboy's-fist-sized dent formed in the door. Then another, and another. Artemis lowered her arrow and Kaldur stepped quickly back as a final run-up from Superboy bashed the door out of its frame, causing Conner and the door to skid across the floor with an awful grating noise.

Megan floated over to Conner to try to help him up while Artemis and Kal rushed into the medical bay to check on Wally, who was lying on the floor. "Are you guys okay?" Megan asked, concern lacing her voice.

Conner stood up quickly and started rapidly glancing around. "Damn kid escaped!" He growled, his fists shaking with anger.

"And he stabbed me, the little brat," Wally whined, sitting up with the help of Kaldur.

"How did a ten-year-old beat your ass?" Artemis asked with a lilt of amusement to her tone.

Wally threw his hand to the side. "I don't know, he was like a crazy ninja assassin! I didn't even see him coming. Managed to take both me and Superboy out without breaking a sweat." Megan floated into the med bay and started checking over his wound. After using her telepathy to try and ease his pain mentally, she used telekinesis to put a wrap around Wally's side. Not that he would really need it. His healing factor would kick in soon enough and he would be good as new, but it was the thought that helped. "Robin is down that way — I'm sure he took care of the little ninja!" KF called out triumphantly.

Conner readied himself to take off down the hallway in search of a rematch with their little intruder, only to be met with their Robin running back towards them. He was clearly favoring his right leg, and there was a noticeable trail of blood drops following him down the hall. His wrist computer was sparking and limiting smoke. "Kid gave me the slip — he's trying to free his allies. We need to stop them before they escape the mountain." Robin glanced over at Kaldur, eyes under his domino mask widening. "You left them alone?!"

"They are secure." The leader explained with certainty.

Robin swiftly spun on his heel, about to start running back toward the interrogation rooms. "With these guys, nothing is secure," He called back with a bitter tone to his voice. Conner ran along with him, followed closely behind by Artemis and Kaldur.

Megan stayed behind to help Wally. "We'll catch up!" Wally called out.

By the time they had made it back, the interrogation room was empty. Robin snarled as he kneeled down next to the electronic panel and pulled out a data pad from his pocket, plugging it into the system. "Hacked. A good hack too." He stood up and turned around. "It's only been a minute and forty-seven seconds. If we are quick we can find them before they can escape the mountain!"

Robin got up and started running again, trying to ignore the horrible twinging pain in his calf. Kal stopped him by putting his arm out in front of the boy. "You are injured and are in no way fit to run off on your own again. Next time you fight them head-on, it could end up worse." The Atlantean scolded.

"I'm fine." Robin shrugged him off. "This is important, you don't understand! We can't lose these guys! We're losing precious time just standing around." He tried to doge around Kaldur.

"You are letting emotion cloud your judgment. We need to think," The man said. "Superboy, can you hear them in the base?" Superboy's hearing was nowhere near as hyper-sensitive as Superman's, but if he focused he should be able to...

"Heading towards the vehicle bay," Conner responded.

Robin ducked under one of Kaldur's arms while the man's focus was on Superboy. "And I would have been halfway there twenty seconds ago if you didn't stop me!" He continued running down the hall. Kaldur sighed and they all took off after him. Something was definitely up with Robin and this strange case. They needed to find out what was bothering him so greatly about these intruders before his emotions ended up getting him or any of the team members hurt in the process.

The team ran around the corner and was immediately met with gunfire. Everyone dodged back around the corner of the cave. "Hurry it up, Red! We don't have all day; I thought you were the smart one!" The biggest of the three runaways called out. He was standing in the doorway of the vehicle bay, laying down cover for the other two to do whatever it was they needed.

Suddenly, Conner ran out from behind the corner and charged straight for the man. The man first tried shooting at his legs but when he realized that they just bounced off. "Shit," the man cursed before raising his gun to shoot more at Conner's chest. Artemis spun around from behind the corner, taking a shot with her arrow that aimed true, piercing the man's right shoulder. He dropped his arm but somehow managed to keep a grip on his gun.

His other hand reached for the gun in his other holster and started to aim toward Artemis before Robin threw a Batarang that embedded itself in the muzzle of the weapon, causing it to blast back at him. He shouted in pain as he dropped the gun, shrapnel painfully launched back at him.

Robin took this chance to run up and use Superboy as a vault, somersaulting twice in the air, landing directly on the man, and knocking him to the ground. "You have some explaining to do," Robin snarled at the man's helmet.

The man chuckled derisively. "Try me, golden boy."
