The evening was quiet, marked only by the faint hum of the city outside and the occasional click of keys on the keyboard. Alex settled into his chair, headphones on, ready for another voice stream with his best friend Kevin. It had become one of the few consistent routines in his otherwise monotonous lockdown life, a way to escape the monotony.
"Hey, Alex! Ready for tonight's game?" Kevin's voice crackled through the speakers, cheerful and upbeat as always, his energy a sharp contrast to Alex's perpetual coldness.
"Yeah, just give me a second," Alex replied, his tone clipped and distant. His demeanor often came off as rude and heartless, a defense mechanism he had built up over time. Despite his handsome face and imposing presence, he was known for his emotional coldness, which he used to shield himself from deeper feelings. His voice, however, had a deep, rich timbre that lingered in the air, pulling attention whether he wanted it or not. Kevin had always found it funny how Alex's voice could command a room, even when the words coming from his mouth were as cold as ice.
Kevin fiddled with the game settings, setting things up, but not before casually dropping something unexpected. "Oh, by the way, I've got a new friend joining us tonight. His name's Wiyan. He's an online friend of mine. I think you two might get along."
Alex barely acknowledged the introduction, more focused on the game and his own internal struggles. "Sure, whatever," he muttered, completely uninterested in the idea of socializing. New people always felt like a burden to him more questions, more attempts to connect. It was easier to keep everyone at a distance.
Meanwhile, across the city, Wiyan was in his room, feeling a buzz of excitement as he adjusted his headset. He had his coffee in hand, the warmth of the cup comforting him as he mentally prepared for the game. But as soon as Alex spoke, Wiyan felt his pulse quicken. That deep, resonant voice was nothing like he had expected. Alex's coldness seemed to vibrate through the mic, and yet there was something about it that hooked Wiyan immediately. He wasn't sure if it was curiosity or attraction, but whatever it was, it made his heart race.
"Hey there! I'm Wiyan. Nice to meet you, Alex," Wiyan said, trying to keep his tone casual, but he couldn't shake the feeling of excitement bubbling under the surface. He leaned back in his chair, biting his lip as he waited for Alex's reply.
Alex, still not looking away from his screen, responded with a simple, "Yeah, hey." It was short, blunt, and gave nothing away, but that voice it lingered in Wiyan's ears. He found himself oddly intrigued, despite the dismissiveness.
Kevin, sensing the awkwardness, tried to break the ice. "So, Wiyan, what's your game strategy tonight?"
Wiyan chuckled, leaning forward to take another sip of his coffee. His body tingled with a strange excitement, like he was on the edge of something unknown. "I'm all about teamwork. I think we'll make a great team. What about you, Alex? What's your usual approach?" He directed the question toward Alex, hoping to get more than a few words this time, even though he knew the answer would likely be another cold, clipped response.
Alex glanced briefly at the screen, his tone colder than before, giving nothing away. "I just play to win. I don't really bother with strategies." His voice was distant, but Wiyan felt his pulse quicken again. There was something about Alex's indifference that made him want to dig deeper.
Wiyan let out a soft breath, trying to steady his heart, but there was no hiding it now he was interested. Intrigued, even. And the more Alex shut him out, the more he wanted to break through. "I see. You're a lone wolf, huh?" Wiyan's voice was light, but his curiosity was sharp. He could feel the challenge, the layers of coldness around Alex, and for some reason, he wanted to be the one to break through them.
