(Dakota Fanning as Thalia -Elementary School-)
Burgess Elementary School, Atlanta GA: 3rd Grade
"Okay class, quiet down, there's something important to discuss." Mrs. Oster announced, shushing the entire classroom with her words. "Now we've just been told that there's a new program, called the PenPal Platform. Parent permission is a must, so I will be giving you all forms to take home to your parents for them to sign. It also has all the information your parents need to know about this program, so make sure you show it to them."
The once quiet classroom burst out, everyone and their friends talking excitedly at the news given, everyone but me. I didn't really have friends, and it's not because I'm weird or awkward.. Talking is too much of an effort for me, I mean really, who has that much energy. "Thalia! Are you going to do the program? I mean I would love to do it, imagine making more friends!" William, a fellow classmate of mine said, as he spoke excitedly into my space. Honestly, I have no problem making friends, but the question is do I really want to. I merely shrugged before bringing my attention towards the window beside me. The sun wasn't shining as bright, so I wasn't technically melting in the heat. It was actually quite breezy outside and I couldn't wait for the recess bell to ring already.
"Now now class, quiet down and sit please, we still have class to continue." Mrs. Oster's voice rang out, earning groans from everyone. I sighed before refocusing on the present. The day consisted of our daily studies, talking time, and lunch, before finally the recess bell rung. It was like a stampede of animals awoken within everyone, with the way they all rushed out of the classroom, ignoring Mrs. Oster's calls to hold on. I rolled my eyes, before slowly standing up, putting my belongings away before making my way to the door. "Thalia! Hold on, can I speak with you for a moment?"
Now for what reason would Mrs. Oster have, for the need to call me when I was ready to walk out. The only part of school I enjoy, and she was interrupting. I have no problem with her, but why would you attempt to ruin the only thing I like about this school.
"You're not in trouble or anything" She started off, and if I was any of these idiots here, I would've taken that badly. "I see you have trouble making friends here.. I mean you don't really seek friendship with others, and you don't speak unless it's to answer a question. I'm worried about you, is everything okay at home?" She asked me, her tone soft as her hands clasped together.
I furrowed my brows in confusion at her words. Why would anything be wrong at home? My mother is overly protective and loving, whilst my father is like a overbearing bear, always saying he's gotta chase the boys away from me, cause I'm too pretty. All in all, my parents, while they hover are the best people ever. And have you met me? You've been my teacher for this long and you don't know me by now? Why would I willingly seek others attention, I quite like my peace and quiet. If I had friends, they would be talking to me nonstop. Which is what I call, a walking Red Flag. "I don't like people and everything is okay at home." I answered her bluntly.
