As we were heading out, we thanked his dad for the meal. 'I want to just apologies for today, it's not the impression we wanted to give you Cynthia. My wife is going through some things right now and I realise it is no excuse for her actions but I want to give you my sincerest apology. I want to invite you both up to my cabin in Nafar as a gift. It gives you guys some alone time and you Brett a much-needed vacation.'

'Thanks, Mr. Hill but there's no need for that I'm ok,' I replied.

'Nonsense dear, it's the least I can do. I know it won't make up for what happened but it's a start. Please, I insist and Cynthia it's Daniel to you. You don't need to call me Mr. Hill it sounds too formal.'

'Okay then, thank you Daniel.' we said our goodbyes and walked outside.

As we walked towards the car we were approached by Penny, 'Cynthia, Cynthia I know I didn't get a chance to talk to you much but I would like for you to join me sometime for a spa day, I think after what happened tonight, you need it.'

'That sounds great Penny I would love that, let me know when and I'll be there.'

'Brett gave me your number already; I hope you don't mind? I want to apologies for my mother I can't believe what she did. I for one will not be talking to her for a while.'

'Penny you don't need to apologies for that, it's not your fault. I don't mind you having my number feel free to call anytime.' We said our goodbyes and stepped into the car.

'I am so sorry; I don't blame you if you don't want anything to do with me or my family after that' he said. I stared out the window blankly in a daze my head still spinning from the evening's events, trying to piece together when exactly it went all wrong, the whole thing was doomed from the moment I entered the house. 'Cynthia, Cynthia? Please talk to me' he said when a few seconds went by and I had not responded.

'Why didn't you tell me your mother was a racist? You had me walking in there thinking that she was a level headed person. Ever since she laid eyes on me, she had it out for me. I can't believe she invited your ex; she obviously thinks there's something going on between you two for her to do that. Is this a joke to you people, I'm a real person with feelings Brett?'.

'I had no idea that she was coming, trust me I was just as surprised as you were. My mother isn't a racist she just isn't as progressive as my father, that's all.'

'Stop making excuses for her, it's all you have been doing all night. For once just say it like it is, your mother hates me because I'm black. I can already see how it's going to end up, I think we need to skip the theatrics and just not see each other anymore. It would be easier for the both of us, that way she gets what she wants and I move on. I can't take your families drama and I will have no part in this freak show' I said, the hurt now turning into anger. I knew I wasn't truly angry at him but instead at his mother and his ex-girlfriend. 'You need to understand she is my mother-.'

'-You know what I'm going to give her an early Christmas present, I don't think we should be together, I think we should break up.'

'Stop being childish, why would you want to throw everything away. I love you Cynthia, don't do this' he said.

'You can't love someone after only knowing them for a few weeks it's not possible, that sort of thing only happens in fairy tales, wake up! Our relationship was doomed the moment you said I was coming to dinner. At least you can be with someone she approves of now.' The car journey was awkward, it seemed to go on forever as soon as they pulled up to my apartment building, I opened the car door and ran out. I just had to get away from him. 'Cynthia! Cynthia please don't-' I couldn't hear the rest of what he said. I frantically pressed the elevator button trying to summon the elevator to come down quicker. The doors opened and I rushed inside, pressing the button for my floor, my body started to shaking as I hugged herself trying to grasp onto my reality. Moments later I stumbled out of the lift staggering to my door fumbling with the keys my eyes were so blurry from the tears. My head pounding, it felt like someone was banging on it like a drum. I broke down in a fit of tears and collapsed at my front door my chest felt like a freight train had just slammed into it.
