The days following the threat from their rival had passed in a whirlwind. Maya found herself drawn deeper into Adrian's world with every passing moment. Despite her father's warnings and her own reservations, she couldn't deny the connection they shared. Adrian was no longer just a fleeting figure in the shadows; he was a man who cared deeply, who fought to protect those he loved, and who, despite everything, had stolen her heart.
But with love came danger, and Maya had always known that Adrian's world was fraught with peril. She just hadn't expected the danger to come for her.
One evening, as Maya closed up the bookstore for the night, she felt a strange unease settle over her. The street outside was unusually quiet, and a chill wind rustled the leaves along the sidewalk. She glanced around, half-expecting to see Adrian's car waiting at the curb like it had been a few times before, but the street was empty.
With a sigh, Maya locked the door behind her and began walking toward her apartment. She had just rounded a corner when she heard footsteps behind her, quick and deliberate. Her heart raced, and she quickened her pace, but the footsteps grew closer.
Before she could react, a black van screeched to a stop beside her. Two men dressed in dark clothing emerged, grabbing her before she could scream. They moved with brutal efficiency, their grips strong and unyielding. Panic surged through her as she struggled, but it was futile. She was dragged into the van, the door slamming shut behind her.
Her world went black as a hood was pulled over her head, muffling her cries. Her heart pounded in her chest, fear clawing at her as the van sped away into the night.
For what felt like hours, Maya was jostled in the back of the van, her mind racing with a thousand questions. Who had taken her? What did they want? And, more terrifyingly, what would Adrian do when he found out?
The van finally came to a stop, and she was dragged out, her feet stumbling as she was led into a building. The air was cold and damp, the sounds of machinery echoing in the distance. The hood was yanked off, and she blinked, disoriented by the sudden light.
She was in a dimly lit warehouse, the air thick with the smell of oil and metal. Standing before her was a man she didn't recognize, but his aura of power and malice was unmistakable. He was tall, with slicked-back dark hair and a cruel smirk on his lips. His eyes gleamed with dangerous intent.
"Dante Marino," he introduced himself with a mock bow, his voice dripping with arrogance. "I've been waiting for the perfect moment to meet the woman who's captured Adrian Rossi's heart."
Maya's blood ran cold at the mention of Adrian. Her mind spun as she tried to process what was happening. Dante Marino—Adrian's most dangerous rival. She had heard whispers of his name in the brief moments Adrian had shared about his world, but she had never imagined their paths would cross like this.
"You're nothing more than leverage," Dante continued, circling her like a predator sizing up his prey. "A way to get under Adrian's skin. You see, he's become a bit too powerful for my liking, and I needed something to tip the scales in my favor."
Maya's heart pounded, but she forced herself to meet Dante's gaze, trying to keep her voice steady. "If you think Adrian will let this slide, you're mistaken."
Dante's smirk widened. "Oh, I'm counting on it. That's the point, sweetheart. Adrian's strength is also his weakness—he cares too much. And now, he'll have no choice but to play my game."
With a sharp nod from Dante, one of the men grabbed Maya by the arm and roughly shoved her into a chair. Her hands were bound tightly behind her back, and she winced as the ropes bit into her skin.
"You'll be staying with me for a while," Dante said, his tone mocking as he glanced at his watch. "I'll make sure Adrian knows where you are soon enough. It'll be fun to see what he's willing to do to get you back."
The door to the warehouse slammed shut, leaving Maya alone with the sound of her own rapid breathing and the faint hum of machinery in the background. Fear gnawed at her insides, but beneath the terror was something else—anger. Dante thought he could use her as a pawn in his twisted game, but Maya was determined to stay strong.
For Adrian.
