Foundations of Fate

The evening sun cast long shadows across my small dorm room in Kano. As a first-year Physiotherapy student, this was my new reality-living away from my family in Niger State, adjusting to a different pace of life, and immersing myself in the demands of my studies. The golden light filtering through the window seemed to highlight the chaos of my desk: textbooks, notes, and scribbled reminders were scattered everywhere.

I had always dreamed of studying Physiotherapy, driven by a fascination with the human body and a desire to help others. The prospect of making a tangible difference in people's lives was what motivated me through late-night study sessions and challenging coursework. But as my first semester exams approached, the pressure began to mount.

My textbooks on anatomy and rehabilitation lay open before me, but my mind struggled to focus. The concepts were intricate, and the sheer volume of material felt overwhelming. It was one thing to be passionate about my field, but it was another to struggle  with the academic rigor required to excel. The stress was palpable, and every page seemed to blur together as I tried to memorize complex details.

Mama's voice came through the thin walls of my dorm, calling from the common area. "Nasrah, dinner is ready! Why don't you take a break and join us?"

I glanced at the clock, surprised to see how much time had passed. With a sigh, I closed my books and made my way to the common area. The other students were gathered around, sharing stories and laughter. For a moment, the weight of my studies lifted, and I allowed myself to relax and enjoy the company.

Dinner was a lively affair, filled with laughter and shared experiences. My friends and I discussed our exams, exchanged study tips, and found solace in each other's company. It was comforting to know that I wasn't alone in facing the challenges of university life.

Returning to my room, I was determined to push through the remaining study hours. As I settled back at my desk, my phone buzzed with a message from Mama. She had arranged a blind date for me-a traditional setup meant to introduce me to someone new. The idea had seemed daunting at first, especially with my focus on exams, but Mama's encouragement had persuaded me to give it a chance.

Oh, before I forget, let me introduce myself. I am Nasrah, a first-year Physiotherapy student at a private university in Kano. I am from Niger State, a place that feels both distant and familiar now that I'm living in this bustling city. The transition has been both exhilarating and challenging, and as I navigate this new chapter of my life, I often find myself reflecting on the journey that brought me here.

Growing up in Niger State, my life was anchored by the loving presence of my family. My father, a respected teacher, was a pillar of strength and wisdom. His dedication to education and his passion for teaching shaped my values and aspirations. My mother, a devoted homemaker, provided a warm and nurturing environment. Her daily routines, from preparing hearty meals to managing our household, were done with a quiet grace that made our house a home. Her unwavering support and her faith in my abilities have guided me through the ups and downs of my academic journey.

Moving to Kano for university was a significant change. The city's vibrant energy and fast pace were a stark contrast to the slower rhythm of my hometown. But I embraced the challenge with determination. My dream of becoming a Physiotherapist has always driven me, fueled by a fascination with the human body and a deep desire to help others heal and recover.

As I glanced at my study schedule and then at the clock, I realized I would need to prepare for this meeting in addition to my studies. The evening was set to be a blend of new experiences and academic pressure. Little did I know, this blind date would introduce me to Ibrahim, a person who would soon play a significant role in my life, altering my path in ways I could never have imagined.
