Ethan:
The sky above the Safe Zone was a dark, churning mass of clouds, casting everything below in a dismal gray light. The aftermath of our final battle with the Directive still hung in the air, thick with smoke and ash, the stench of burning metal and destruction clinging to everything. The Safe Zone, our home, lay in ruins.
And Lena was gone.
The weight of her absence was unbearable, pressing down on me like a physical force. I could still see her face, hear her voice, and feel her touch's warmth, but she wasn't there. She would never be here again. The reality of that hit me with the force of a sledgehammer every time I thought about it.
But I couldn't allow myself to wallow in grief. Not yet. There was too much left to do too much at stake. Lena had sacrificed everything so that we could have a future, and I wasn't about to let that sacrifice be in vain.
I stood at the edge of the destroyed Safe Zone, looking out over the wreckage. The Directive's attack had been brutal and swift, leaving little more than rubble in its wake. But we had stopped them—at least for now. We had thrown a wrench into their plans and disrupted their control, but I knew they weren't finished. Not yet.
They were regrouping. Somewhere out there, the Directive's leaders—the Overseers—were still plotting, still scheming. And I couldn't rest until they were gone for good.
I glanced down at my hands, still stained with blood—Lena's blood. My heart twisted in my chest, a hollow ache that wouldn't disappear. I had made her a promise, and I intended to keep it. I would finish what we started.
I took a deep breath, letting the cool air fill my lungs, and turned toward the survivors behind me. Their faces were gaunt, their eyes hollow with exhaustion and fear, but they were still alive. And that was something.
"We need to move," I said, my voice hoarse from days of fighting and shouting. "The Directive isn't done. They'll be back, and we need to be ready."
Carter, his face streaked with dirt and blood, stepped forward. He looked older now, worn down by everything we had been through, but his resolve was still there, burning bright. "Where do we go?" he asked, his voice rough with exhaustion.
"We go after them," I said, my jaw tightening. "We take the fight to them. We finish this."
A murmur of uncertainty rippled through the group. I could see the doubt in their eyes, the fear. We had lost so much already—so many lives, so much of ourselves. And now I was asking them to keep fighting and risking everything. But I couldn't stop. Not now.
"We don't have a choice," I continued, my voice hard. "If we let them regroup and recover, they'll come for us again. And next time, we won't be so lucky."
The survivors exchanged glances, but no one argued. They knew I was right. The Directive had already shown us what they were capable of. If we didn't stop them now, they would hunt us down one by one until there was nothing left.
"I know you're tired," I said, softening my tone. "I know you've lost more than anyone should have to bear. But this is our only chance. We can't let them win."
Carter nodded slowly, his eyes hardening with determination. "We'll follow you, Ethan. Whatever it takes."
I nodded, my chest tightening with a mix of gratitude and guilt. I didn't want to lead these people into another battle, but there was no other way. The Directive had to be stopped, and we were the only ones who could do it.
"Pack what you can carry," I said, turning toward the crumbling remnants of the Safe Zone. "We leave at dawn."
