The firefight was a blur of sound and chaos, but Yoona and Yoongi moved like a well-rehearsed duet. Bullets whizzed past, the screeching sound of metal on metal filling the docks, yet every time Yoona threw herself into danger, Yoongi was there, watching her back—just as she was for him.
"Behind you!" Yoongi shouted, his voice cutting through the cacophony as he dispatched an attacker with a quick, precise strike.
Yoona spun just in time to see a rival charging toward her, gun raised. She ducked, sweeping his legs out from under him and landing a swift blow to knock him unconscious.
"Getting sloppy," Yoongi quipped as he slid next to her, eyes scanning the chaos for the next threat.
Yoona shot him a look. "I'm handling it."
"Sure, you are," he said with a slight smirk, firing off a shot that took down another approaching enemy.
Yoona's pulse raced, and not just because of the fight. The heat of the battle, the way their movements had synced so naturally—it made her realize how dangerously close they had become in such a short span of time.
Still, no matter how much her instincts warned her, she couldn't afford to think about it now. Not with the rival gang closing in.
"Yoongi!" one of his men called out from the far side of the docks. "More coming from the west!"
Yoongi cursed under his breath, quickly assessing the situation. "We need to get out of here before they box us in," he muttered.
Yoona narrowed her eyes. "Your men are trained. We can hold them off."
"We could, but that'll cost us more than it's worth," he replied, wiping the sweat from his brow. "We need to fall back."
Yoona hated the idea of retreat, especially when the fight was still raging, but she knew Yoongi was right. If they stayed, they'd be overrun. Her team was already pushing the limits of their endurance.
"I'll cover the north side," Yoona said, tightening her grip on her weapon. "Get your people out."
Yoongi hesitated, his expression unreadable as he studied her. "Why help me, Yoona? After all this?"
She paused, not entirely sure herself. The logical answer was simple: they had a common enemy right now. But beneath that was something far more complicated, something she didn't want to admit.
"I'm not helping you," she replied coldly. "I'm helping myself."
A flicker of something—amusement, perhaps—crossed Yoongi's face, but he didn't press the issue. "Fine. But don't get yourself killed."
Yoona bristled at his tone. "I can handle myself."
"Clearly," he said, his voice low, yet there was an edge of something softer, almost protective, buried beneath the sarcasm.
With no time to linger on the odd exchange, Yoona turned and sprinted toward the north side of the docks. Her heart was pounding, not just from the fight but from the confusing knot of emotions twisting inside her. Why did it feel like something had shifted between them? Why did Yoongi's voice carry that strange mix of concern and detachment?
And worse, why did she care?
Later That Night - A Secluded Alleyway
The team had managed to escape the docks, slipping into the shadows of the city like ghosts. Yoona leaned against a brick wall, catching her breath, her mind still racing from the events of the night.
Jisoo approached her, wiping sweat from her brow. "That was too close."
"We're lucky to have gotten out," Yoona replied, her voice steady despite the storm brewing in her head. "But this isn't over. Not by a long shot."
Jisoo eyed her carefully, then crossed her arms. "And what's with you and him?"
Yoona stiffened. "What are you talking about?"
"Don't play dumb." Jisoo's voice was quiet but pointed. "You and Agust. I saw the way you two were during that fight. You trust him, at least more than I thought you would."
"I don't trust him," Yoona snapped, pushing herself off the wall. "It's strategic. We had a common enemy."
Jisoo raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. "You sure about that? Because I saw something else."
"Jisoo, drop it."
But Jisoo wasn't backing down. "Yoona, you've been obsessed with taking him down for years. But the way you two were moving out there, like you've been fighting together your whole lives—it wasn't normal. I'm not saying you like him, but something's changing between you two."
Yoona clenched her fists, not wanting to acknowledge the truth in Jisoo's words. "I'm focused on the mission."
"Are you?" Jisoo's eyes softened, though her concern was clear. "Just be careful, okay? He's dangerous."
Yoona met her gaze, her expression hardening. "I know that better than anyone."
Elsewhere - Yoongi's Headquarters
Yoongi sat in his office, the weight of the night's events still pressing down on him. His men were celebrating their survival in the adjacent room, but Yoongi was lost in thought, staring down at the whiskey glass in his hand.
"Boss?" Namjoon, his second-in-command, entered the room, closing the door behind him. "The crew's in the clear. No major losses."
Yoongi nodded, his mind elsewhere. "Good."
Namjoon studied him for a moment, then leaned against the desk. "What happened back there? You and Smoke. You two looked like you were fighting side by side."
Yoongi's jaw tightened. "It was the situation. We had a common enemy."
Namjoon wasn't convinced. "You've faced common enemies before, but this felt different."
Yoongi didn't respond, taking a slow sip of whiskey instead. His mind replayed the moments at the docks—how Yoona had moved with such fierce determination, how they had instinctively protected each other, how her words had cut deeper than they should have.
"You're not falling for her, are you?" Namjoon asked, half-joking but with a hint of concern.
Yoongi shot him a look. "She's the enemy."
"Didn't look like it tonight," Namjoon said, shrugging. "Just saying, boss, be careful. This could get messy."
"It's already messy," Yoongi muttered under his breath, though he knew Namjoon was right.
The truth was, Yoona had gotten under his skin in ways he hadn't anticipated. She was smart, determined, and far more dangerous than he had given her credit for. He respected her, even admired her in some twisted way. But more than that, he felt something he hadn't felt in a long time—a pull, a connection he couldn't explain.
And it infuriated him.
Yoona's Apartment
Back in her small apartment, Yoona sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her reflection in the mirror. She had washed the blood and grime from her face, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something inside her had changed. Something had shifted between her and Yoongi, and it terrified her.
Why had she felt that strange sense of relief when he had come to her aid? Why had she hesitated, even for a second, when she had the chance to finish him off?
Her mind whirled with questions, but no answers came. All she knew was that Yoongi wasn't just an enemy anymore. He was something more.
And that made him more dangerous than ever.
