CINDY MENDES OPENS UP ABOUT 'GUTS' LYRICS

When we asked Cindy if she wanted to tell us about her songwriting process while writing her new album, 'Guts', Cindy was beyond enthusiastic. To quote, Cindy told us; "I just worked so fucking hard to write an album that was true to myself and things I'd gone through, and I really want to explain it so that people can resonate with it better, you know?"

We asked Cindy a couple of questions, and we weren't disappointed by the answers.

What was the first song you wrote off of 'Guts'?
"The first song I wrote on 'Guts' was actually ' Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl', and the funny thing about that song is that it was originally going to be called 'Social Suicide', you know, hence the chorus-- but I had all this pent-up rage because I know this girl who was also homeschooled but just always seemed to be doing so much better than me. You know what I mean? Yeah, well, I said 'Let's call it Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl' and Dan was like, 'fuck yeah!'"

Which song means the most to you on this album?
"The Grudge. I wrote that song when I was trying to get over a heartbreak-- and here's the thing-- it wasn't a heartbreak from a boy, it was from one of my closest friends, and it just really fuckin' hurt, so I had to write a song about it and Dan says watching me write that song was the most in-my-element I've ever been. Especially that line 'you have everything and you still want more', agh! Fucking kills me."

What's your favorite extra track on the deluxe version?
"I love this question. Probably 'Obsessed,' honestly. I think it's really catchy and my lovely, lovely friend Chappell does backing vocals on it-- plus it's some of the most raw, real lyrics I've ever written."

Do you ever get nervous writing songs because of the backlash that you may or may not receive?
"Oh, of course. I almost instantly regretted that Instagram post caption... 'A song for that bottle blonde bitch your ex used to date.' God, even my friends were like 'Cindy, you dumbass,' and I can't blame them. I'm very impulsive, and I tend to just say what's on my mind... but I'm really honest, too, and I feel like a lot of artists today tend to just... lie, and that's not really me."

Finally... any messages for the people who inspired this album?
"Oh, fuck, I shouldn't... I've already said too much. Maybe just... don't be mean, don't be nasty... and just don't be vicious, man."

What do you think? We love Cindy's album and we're over the moon to know more about it. Hopefully she joins us some time again in the future.
