Chapter: Home

Katrina stood in the kitchen. The morning sun streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow on the countertops. The scent of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. It mixed with the aroma of toast from the toaster. She was still getting used to a new house. After everything, its normalcy felt surreal.

She absentmindedly stirred a bowl of cereal, her thoughts drifting to the events of the past few days. The crunch of the cereal flakes was grounding. It was a stark contrast to the whirlwind of recent supernatural events. Yet, despite the calm, an undercurrent of anticipation nagged at her. Today, she would meet Luca again, and the thought of it made her heart beat just a little faster.

The sound of heavy footsteps approaching snapped her back to the present. She glanced up just in time to see her stepbrother, Jake, saunter into the kitchen with a lazy grin.

“Well, if it isn’t Miss Mysterious herself,” Jake teased, leaning against the counter as he reached for an apple. “What’s got you all spaced out this morning? Thinking about your boyfriend?”

Katrina rolled her eyes, refusing to let him get to her. “He’s not my boyfriend,” she replied coolly, though the slight flush in her cheeks betrayed her. She kept her focus on her cereal, hoping Jake would drop the subject, but she knew better.

“Oh, sure, sure,” Jake continued, clearly enjoying himself. “That’s why you’re all dreamy-eyed and can’t even focus on breakfast. Come on, Kat, I’ve known you forever. Spill it—what’s so special about this guy?”

Katrina sighed, pushing her bowl away. “Can’t you just leave it alone for once, Jake? I’m just… thinking about things. Important things."

Jake raised an eyebrow, not buying it. But, he backed off, sensing she wasn't in the mood for their usual banter. “Fine, fine. I’ll drop it. But seriously, Kat, you’ve been acting weird lately. If you need to talk or whatever, I’m here.”

She offered him a small, appreciative smile. Despite his teasing, Jake had a good heart, and she knew he meant well. “Thanks, Jake. I’ll keep that in mind.”

After breakfast, Katrina wandered into the living room. A half-unpacked suitcase sat in the corner, a silent reminder of how much had changed. She sighed, kneeling down to continue the task she had been putting off since she returned home. She pulled out clothes, books, and a few keepsakes. She placed them neatly in their places. Each item felt like a relic from another life, a life that seemed so distant now.

As she folded the last of her clothes, her mind wandered back to Luca. He’d said they would meet today, though he hadn’t given her an exact time. She wondered what he was doing now. Probably something cool, knowing him. The thought brought a slight smile to her lips.

Just as she was finishing up, Jake wandered back into the room, his teasing grin returning. “Still no word from your ‘not-boyfriend’?” he asked, plopping down on the couch and tossing a throw pillow into the air.

Katrina gave him a playful shove. “Don’t you have something better to do than bother me?”

Jake pretended to think about it, then shook his head with exaggerated seriousness. “Nope, bothering you is pretty much my top priority today.”

She couldn’t help but laugh; the sound easing the tension that had been building in her chest all morning. Despite everything, moments with Jake reminded her of some normalcy. And for now, she’d hold onto that normalcy as long as she could.

“Alright, alright, I’ll leave you alone,” Jake said, standing up and stretching. “But don’t keep me in suspense forever. I expect a full report when you get back from… wherever you’re meeting this mystery guy.”
