The Training and the Booster.
They were all forced to wake up as early as 6 am in the morning, Adewale guessed that the time system of this world was relatively the same as that of Earth “Alright rodents it's time to begin your trial by fire” the commander announced,
They were all first sent on a 5-mile hike, and then they were drilled in various survival skills. Adewale noticed that it was the basic military training usually carried out on earth, but for some reason, he felt that something was amiss. One of the boys would suddenly glow in a strange aura, and then that’s it for the training; the act dumbfounded him without measure.
“He’s acquired the skill” someone whispered beside him.
“What?” Adewale pressed.
“This training is to force the body to acquire a skill or to force an initial evolution” the other answered.
Now it made sense; human beings in this world adapted to the environment by absorbing the energy and harnessing it; the result was the Evo-leveling system. Once a man gets stronger or learns something new, he can evolve; his muscles, his bones and even his body chemistry change to adjust to his newly acquired strength and skill. So the training was simply to assist in the growth of their strength.
“I would advise you to work hard,” the commander voiced, “Anyone with a skill that’s useless to the shelter would be disposed of, now put in more effort!”
“Yes sir!” they all replied. And the exercise continued.
For the rest of the week, they were all drilled in various combat lessons, sword skills, stealth, knife skills and so on. Adewale kept close to Attah to avoid any trouble, but trouble seemed to be lingering in every corner. On the eve of the level evaluation for his group, he bumped into 3 brutish boys and almost fought.
“I’m sorry,” he said as he picked himself from the ground,
“Sorry for yourself trash” the other replied,
“Why call me trash” Adewale asked in a confused tone, “I didn’t do anything to you”
“You were born,” The brute declared; Adewale scowled in reply, knowing fully well that should this lead to a fight, he’d lose miserably. “How dare you look at me like that with those worthless eyes”
“Everyone deserves to be respected equally…” he would have continued but a sudden blow to his back almost caused him to black out.
“Respect your betters, rodent!” the commander shouted as he marched unto the scene. He was the one who struck Adewale in an attempt to pacify the brutes and quite possibly save Adewale’s life.
“Yes sir!” Adewale replied, “Sorry sir”
“Now return to your post!”
“Yes sir,” Adewale replied and ran off, grateful for the timely intervention of the commander; then the commander faced the brutes.
“I will not have you kill any of the recruits before they can make themselves useful to this shelter” he declared,
“Relax! Elder,” the other retorted, “They are all meat for the grinder; what’s the difference between one dead meat and five?”
“The fact that some of them can become S rank like you, you entitled brat!” The commander shot,
“In their dreams,” The boy said as he walked away with a triumphant smile on his face. “All trash must be disposed of promptly.”
**********
“His name is Kenny Akinbode, his friends call him Kenny,” One of his new friends said when he asked about the arrogant seniors. “He’s heir of the Akinbode family and the next in line to the Olori-ebi(Family head)” Lakan said with a cold sneer on his face.
“Why is he here?” Adewale thought out loud. “He’s an entitled brat, which means his corrupt family would keep him as far from any danger as possible.”
“If you’re not a treasure, then you’re a trophy” Lakan retorted,
“Wha…” Adewale exclaimed in confusion.
“Treasures are kept away from others by the greedy, but a trophy is set out on display majorly for pride” Lakan explained. He’s an S-rank Assassin; no one can challenge him.
“I see,” Adewale replied, grasping the situation, the boy thinks he’s a god and the whole world revolves around him. Adewale signed in frustration then gazed towards the evaluation room in determination. “Tomorrow, things will change.”The next day, the evaluation began. They had all been drilled in the various disciplines, including archery, swordsmanship, advanced weaponry and so on, and now it was time for them to measure the skills they had acquired and how they could be exploited towards the benefit of the Lagos shelter. Adewale practically trembled with excitement; this was, after all, the part where the main character in an Isekai would display his overwhelming skill for the world to see. They all marched to the military research compound and stood in front of the lab, a large green crystal ball was there prepared for them. There was also an arcade-looking standing computer placed beside the crystal ball. Adewale could tell that that was the device set up to measure their skills; for some reason, he could not stop his heart from thumping hard. “This is it” he thought, with excitement.
“The moment your name is called,” The commandant declared, “You will step forward and place your hand on this crystal orb, Is that clear?”
“Yes sir!” they all replied.
Adewale noticed the self-serving bully and some of the other recruits watching at a distance, obviously observing for the nail that stood out. He shook his head in obvious exasperation, Kenny is indeed cautious of anyone who could threaten his position as the youngest rising star.
“Ọsẹ Ọladapọ!” the first name resounded; the boy about a year older than Adewale marched forward and placed his hand on the crystal; there was a slight radiance of light, and then the data was displayed on the computer screen. “Skill Pyro, Evo-cap 4, rank E” he called out the rank with disgust in his voice. Ọsẹ bowed his head in silent disappointment as he walked away; he found it difficult to contain his tears. His hopes for the future had been dashed.
“Lakan Afisoye!” the Commander called, Lakan responded and marched towards the Crystal orb. He had hoped that the result would be better than that of Ọṣẹ but that was only wishful thinking. “Skill: Tank, superior strength, Evo-cap 5, rank E” the commander announced with the same tone as that of Ọṣẹ.
Now Adewale felt his heart pound violently; like all the other candidates, they felt the pressure of the moment. As the commander called the next candidate, he felt his heart pounded even louder. He started to take deeper breaths and practically blinded himself with anxiety.
“Adewale!” the commander announced which caused Adewale's heart to jump in sudden shock. Adewale carefully counted his steps as he walked towards the crystal orb, and then he placed his hands on the crystal with a silent prayer in his heart.
“Skill: booster, rank E, Evo-cap: 1” the commander announced after he observed the monitor with a hint of disgusting his voice. Adewale felt his entire world crumble before his eyes; he had hoped that he would be given something better than this; he had hoped that he was the main character of this story. Unfortunately, God had played a dirty game against him; how was he going to survive?
Adewale was traumatized by those words and remained fixed in one position for more than a minute, but in all isekai stories, the main character always shines the brightest during a magic test or a magical examination. Why was he facing this here and now? He was beyond confused. Then, his confusion led to despair. It seemed he was going to die in this world without achieving anything.
“leave!” the command that declared the moment he noticed Adewale was wasting his time, “you're not the only candidate that needs to be evaluated”
Adewale nodded politely and quietly turned around to take his place in the line. He continued to fade into depression as the day progressed, he didn’t even bother to listen to the evaluation of all the other candidates.
The evaluation of all the candidates had finally concluded, it was about 5 pm in the evening when the evaluation ended. The commander then divided them into three groups, the unit group; the action group and the superior group. They were divided according to their rank; the unit group consisted of those whose Evo-cap ranges from 1 to 9, the action group consisted of those whose Evo-cap ranges from 10-70 and finally, the superior group whose Evo-cap ranges from 70 and above. Each group was then taken to a separate dorm from the ones they used when they first arrived.
Adewale and the rest of his group were taken to a large room that was poorly furnished and a little cramped; this was where the authorities kept the waste products that were not useful for the shelter. His friend Attah tried to cheer him up, but to no avail; it was like Attah had shut himself off from the outside world; that evening, he didn’t notice the period for the evening meal and thus did not participate in the struggle for food. This was how deep his depression had been and how badly damaged his spirit was.
