The First Attack on the Shelter
At around 3 am, he was still in deep depression; Adewale was thinking about all the anime he had watched in his previous life, how the protagonist had excelled above all his peers and gotten even with his bullies simply by having an unfair advantage. He had assumed that the same case would happen to him, he remembered “Clover of the black book” where the character could negate the magic attacks of his opponents, he also remembered “The Cheating Magician Magic Mage” the character was over-powered from the very beginning of the season to the end of the season, never losing a fight. The case is different for him; it seemed like he was going to be killed by the corruption of this world, he assumed with despair, but then something triggered in his memory that he had completely disregarded. A voice prompt that had given him a notification a few weeks ago when he was in the company of his best friend, and then it clicked. Sitting down and pitying himself would achieve nothing; the best way to survive in this world was to gather allies; now that they had all been tested and divided into groups, he could tell that they would soon be sent into the wild to face the dangers of this world. He needs allies to assist him in his survival, and then he needs goals to achieve; all characters in a new world need to find their place in that world, and he is no exception.
“I am not giving up, not now, not ever.” then he exhaled, “In both the anime and the real world, all characters can become the protagonists if they continue to persevere” With his mind made up, he marched towards the dorms in preparation for a new day.***********
The night was pleasant, and all the people rested blissfully; the wall that separated the shelter from the dangers of the outside world was silent, and the Ẹṣọs kept guard, knowing that the Ẹboras could attack at any time.
“Over there!” One of the night guards cried in terror. “They’re coming”
“Battle stations!!” The second guard responded, “Sound the alarm, send word to the shelter HQ, we need reinforcements!! Tell them to send in the S-rank Ẹṣọs or the walls will be breached”
“Yes sir!”
There was a sudden roar as the colossal monster approached the shelter, driven by its instincts for survival and the idea of a feast. The Ẹṣọs armed the cannons and prepared to engage the new threat, those with the Pyro skill prepared their aura for magical attacks. The alarm was sounded and the whole of the shelter was on high alert. The approaching beast was a king-sized lizard accompanied by human-sized insects that fed off the organic waste that leaked from between the lizard’s scales.
“Fire!” the leader cried, the resulting battle was devastating and continued for the next 3 hours. The insects killed a few of the men on the city defence wall while the giant Ẹbọra tried to push its way towards the city. The crystal-powered cannons and explosive magic fireballs kept the giant Ẹbọra at bay, but for how long?***
Not too far away, the alarm in the dorms sounded, forcing all the trainees, including Adewale, up from their beds; they were all unfairly ushered outside the dorms with one instruction. “Get ready for combat!!”
They were all given each a crystal-powered weapon that looked like a machine gun and several rounds of ammunition. Then they were hurriedly loaded into the carrier vehicles by twenty per load and rushed off to the battleground.
“Alright, roaches!” The commander cried from the holographic communication unit. “The western part of the shelter is presently under attack by those bastard Ẹbọra scum, one colossal-sized Reptile-King and a couple of human-sized Predator-flies” Then he gave them a slight smile, “This is your baptism by fire, Your mission is not the Reptile king leave that for the S-ranks, your mission is the Predator-flies”
The hologram then changed into a visual display of the Predator fly; Adewale could see the similarities between this fly and the common house fly from his previous world. “These bastards can spill acids and they have razor-sharp limbs, stay clear of both and good luck”
The vehicle came to an abrupt stop, and the doors were thrown open; they all matched out of the vehicles, prepared for action, only to be exposed to the devastation of war. it was like the commander had said “A trial by fire!” Adewale knew by instinct and from the knowledge of movies in the previous world that more than half of the people brought here were going to die; they were not properly trained to handle this situation… and then it hit him as he looked around at those present. “We’re all E-rank” This was not a mission, it was an execution!! The leaders of this shelter were simply taking out the trash. He gnashed his teeth in suppressed rage.
“Everyone please come together!” He yelled out hoping that they would listen to him. As he observed the carnage and destruction within the immediate vicinity, Attah responded immediately; a few others followed his example while some, oblivious to what was going on, joined in out of curiosity. Others were scared by the seen in the environment. I needed someone to guide them on what to do next. Lakan Afisoye also responded and walked towards Adewale, and thus, others joined.
Adewale felt his heart pound in anticipation as they all gathered towards him, “We need to work together if we’re going to survive this!” he yelled above the chaos.
One of the boys hissed. “Stupid idiot!” he spat, “Every man for himself!” and with that, he ran off, shooting indiscriminately at any fly he could see.
The rest remained, hoping that Adewale had an idea that could save their lives. “What is your plan?” Ọṣẹ asked,
“We must fight as a single unit”, Adewale voiced, remembering all the military drills he had seen in movies from his previous life, “We will depend on each other, divide into teams of 10!” he ordered.
Adewale had them form circles of 6 each, 4 members in the middle, and the 6 would form a defensive kill circle watching each other’s back while the 4 within the circle would concentrate on the airborne threat. Then they marched towards the battlefield; luckily, the predictor flies were governed by instinct and lacked any true form of intelligence. The swarm of flies was easily routed by the rookies under Adewale’s command; the thing that he didn’t take into account was that this was the first wave. The second wave was more dense and far more viscous.
“Everyone!” He yelled desperately, “We need to adjust our strategy; if this continues, we’ll be overwhelmed!”
“I can use my shield!” Another yelled, “I just evolved, I’m level 3 now!”
“Do it!” Adewale cried, then he ordered everyone else sharply as he shot down 3 more Predator flies. “everyone gather together”
They all replied obediently and clustered together; in an instant, they were all covered beneath an impregnable shield; the flies rammed against the shield but failed to break through. There was a moment of reprieve, but Adewale did not stop thinking about the next step; these guys trusted him with their lives, and he knew that the shield could not be held for long.
“How long can you hold it up?” He queried,
“Not long” the other replied,
“Is anyone here with the electric skill?” He continued,
“Here!” Another responded
“What about the taunt skill?” Adewale announced,
“Here!” The one called Lakan replied,
“Good” Adewale cried with a smile on his face, “Because I have an idea”
The flies continued to swarm the shelter, with the intent of slaughtering the humans foolish enough to harm their food source. The people in the local districts were fearful because the flies had begun the onslaught on the nearby town, but before they had the chance to do any damage, an amplified taunt skill caught all their attention. In an instant, they all swarmed towards a single point squeezing against each other to get the prey that laid helpless within, the lightning attack burst forth destroying every insectoid beast in contact with the shield.
“Alright guys” Adewale cried, “With this, you’ve all Evolved, keep the formation, We’re all going home alive”
“Sir!” they all responded.
“New skill acquired: Dependable leadership; all those beneath your leadership gain x2 stat boost”, Adewale heard and slightly smiled. “Boosting skill has reached level 2! Total boosting capabilities 200%” The problem was that his skills could not be used unless someone was willing to obey him.
“Alright, men, the third wave is coming!” he cried, pointing towards the sky, alerting everyone to the incoming swarm. Adewale took a few seconds to observe the battlefield; almost everyone, including the ones who had taken his words for granted before, were now obeying his orders or simply copying their combat style. He signed in relief and then focused on the incoming swarm.
“Fire!” he cried out, And in an instant, the sky was filled with the plasma bullets from crystal-powered rifles. It seemed that they were all going to survive this, but that thought was far from true. “Shield!” Adewale cried, “Noooooww!!” but he had spoken too soon, a stream of concentrated fire shot down form the midst of the predator-flies to make a direct hit on Adewale and his company.
“No” one of the survivors who wasn’t part of the company whispered in terror,
“Impossible” Another cried,
“How is this possible?” the third cried in confusion.
Their fear was well-founded; amid the swarm was something they had not expected to encounter. The attack was not made by a Predator-fly, they lacked the biological organs to generate fire, the Ẹbọra that attacked them was a Queen-fly a far more formidable beast than the Predator-fly.
