The night settled over the sanctuary like a thick blanket, the air heavy with tension. Seraphina stood at the window of her room, her mind racing with thoughts of Valeria. She couldn't shake the feeling that someone within the sanctuary was responsible for the betrayal, and it gnawed at her constantly.
The moonlight cast long shadows across the courtyard, and she could hear the faint murmur of voices downstairs. Everyone was on edge after the discovery of the planted note. The tension between them was palpable, and Seraphina knew that if they didn't act soon, the fragile peace they'd managed to hold onto would shatter.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock at the door.
"Come in," Seraphina called, her voice weary.
The door creaked open, and Lena stepped inside. Her eyes were shadowed with worry, but there was a determination in her expression that Seraphina hadn't seen before.
"We need to talk," Lena said softly, closing the door behind her.
Seraphina turned to face her, arms crossed over her chest. "What is it?"
Lena stepped closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "I know you're trying to protect Valeria. But people are starting to question your judgment."
Seraphina's eyes narrowed. "I'm not abandoning her. I know she's innocent."
"I believe you," Lena said quickly, her tone earnest. "But we have to be smart about this. Whoever is behind this wants to create chaos, and they're succeeding. We can't afford to fall apart now."
Seraphina let out a slow breath, her gaze softening. "I know. But I can't just sit back and watch while Valeria takes the blame for something she didn't do."
Lena hesitated for a moment, then took a step closer. "Then we need to figure out who's really behind this."
Seraphina met Lena's gaze, a flicker of hope igniting in her chest. "You're right. We need to get ahead of this."
Seraphina and Lena moved quietly through the sanctuary's halls, careful not to attract attention. They made their way to the old library, a place often overlooked by the others. It was dark and musty, the scent of ancient tomes filling the air.
"This place always gave me the creeps," Lena muttered, glancing around nervously.
Seraphina smirked. "You get used to it."
They began searching through the shelves, looking for any clues that might have been left behind. Seraphina's instincts told her that the traitor had been planning this for some time, and if they were careful, they might find something useful.
After what felt like hours of searching, Lena let out a small gasp.
"Seraphina, look at this."
Seraphina hurried over to where Lena was standing, her eyes falling on a hidden compartment behind one of the bookcases. Inside was a small journal, the pages worn and faded with age.
"It's written in an old dialect," Seraphina said, squinting at the pages. "But I can make out some of it. It looks like... plans. Notes on movements and actions."
Lena frowned. "But whose journal is it?"
Seraphina's eyes darkened as she flipped through the pages. "I don't know yet. But it's someone with knowledge of the Valtors. And it's clear they've been working against us for a while."
The sanctuary was quiet, the usual hustle of the early morning routine replaced with a tense stillness. Seraphina sat at the table, the journal open in front of her as she pored over its contents.
