The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the courtyard of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Students milled about, laughter echoing against the ancient stone walls. Sirius Black, leaning against a weathered pillar, watched the crowd with a mix of admiration and anxiety. His heart raced as his gaze settled on Y/N, a Slytherin girl with a cascade of dark hair that caught the golden light. She was laughing with her friends, her smile radiant enough to brighten even the gloomiest of dungeons.
"Pads, you're drooling," came a teasing voice from beside him. Remus Lupin, with his sandy hair and thoughtful eyes, nudged Sirius with his elbow.
"Shut up, Moony," Sirius replied, trying to appear nonchalant. "I'm just... observing."
"Observing? More like staring. You might as well be a lovesick puppy," Remus chuckled, leaning back against the wall next to him.
"Maybe I am," Sirius muttered, his eyes still fixed on Y/N. She tossed her head back in laughter, and Sirius felt a pang of longing. He had never felt this way about anyone before, and it terrified him.
"Honestly, mate, you need to tell her. It's getting ridiculous," Remus said, a hint of seriousness creeping into his tone.
Sirius shook his head, a frown creasing his brow. "And risk James going off on her? No way. You know how he is with Slytherins."
"Yeah, but..." Remus began, but Sirius cut him off.
"Besides, it's not like she'd even be interested in a Gryffindor like me," he said, his voice dropping to a whisper as he dragged a hand through his dark hair.
Just then, James Potter, known to his friends as Prongs, bounded over, his confidence radiating like sunlight. "Hey, lads! What's up?" He grinned, his trademark mischief glinting in his eyes.
"Nothing much, just discussing... Potions," Remus said, shooting a warning glance at Sirius.
"Potions? Pfft. That's boring. I've got a better idea. Let's go prank Filch!" James suggested, his enthusiasm infectious.
"Not today, Prongs. I've got a lot on my mind," Sirius replied, his voice barely above a murmur.
James raised an eyebrow. "What's bothering you? You look like you've just seen a ghost."
Sirius opened his mouth to respond, but his attention was suddenly drawn back to Y/N, who had stood up and was now walking toward the castle. But just as she passed by, a group of Gryffindors, led by James, made a snide comment that echoed across the courtyard.
"Look at that snake slithering away," James sneered, laughter bubbling up from his friends.
Sirius's heart plummeted. "James, stop!" he shouted, stepping forward before he could think better of it.
"What? It's just a joke," James said, shrugging it off.
"Yeah, but it's not funny!" Sirius snapped, feeling the heat rise in his cheeks. "She's not a snake. Her name is Y/N. And she doesn't deserve that."
James blinked in surprise, the laughter fading from his expression. "Whoa, Padfoot, I didn't know you cared that much."
"I do care," Sirius replied, his voice lower now, almost vulnerable. "I... I like her, alright?"
