I sat next to Josh in math class, feeling a little more hopeful today. For the first time in what felt like forever, he actually looked at me, not just with his usual blank stare, but with a smile. It was small, but it was there, and it made me feel like maybe things were finally getting back on track. That simple smile eased some of the tension I'd been carrying around, and for the first time in days, I wasn't so worried about our relationship falling apart. Maybe I'd overthought things.
As class started, I leaned in a little closer and decided to break the silence between us. "Hey, I wanted to ask... what's been going on with you lately? You seemed really distant the past few days," I said, trying to keep my voice casual. His expression shifted slightly, and for a second, I wondered if I had pushed too hard. But then he sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"Yeah, sorry about that," he muttered, his voice quieter than usual. "I just found out my grandma died. The weird thing is, I didn't even know she existed until after she passed." His words hung in the air for a moment, and I could see the mix of confusion and sadness in his eyes. I hadn't expected that.
Josh's eyes dropped to the desk, and he fiddled with the edge of his notebook. "I just... I don't know," he continued, his voice a little rougher now. "It's weird. I wish I knew her, you know? Before she kicked the bucket. Like, I feel guilty for not feeling sad, but how can I feel sad for someone I never even met?"
I stayed quiet, letting him talk. This was the most open he'd been in days, and even though the topic was heavy, it felt good to finally understand what had been weighing on him. He shook his head, clearly frustrated with the whole situation. "I didn't even know she existed. My parents never talked about her, and now suddenly, I'm supposed to feel something?" He sighed, leaning back in his chair. "It's just... weird."
I nodded, reaching out to gently touch his arm. "I get that. It's a lot to process."
As Josh kept talking about his grandmother, I realized he'd probably been so wrapped up in all of this that he hadn't even noticed how distant he'd been. It wasn't me. He wasn't pulling away on purpose, and that thought made me feel a lot better. I'd spent days worrying about us, but now I understood.
I smiled to myself, a small wave of relief washing over me. Sure, it wasn't an easy situation for him, but at least now I knew why he had been so off lately. It wasn't about our relationship falling apart—it was just life hitting him hard.
Next class was with April, and as soon as I walked into the room, I could tell something was up. She had this huge grin on her face, like she was hiding the best surprise ever. I didn't think much of it at first, just chalked it up to her usual energy, but the second I sat down next to her, she whipped out something from her bag. My eyes immediately widened as I recognized what it was: my laptop. The laptop that had been completely trashed just yesterday.
"Ta-da!" April said, holding it up like a prize. My jaw literally dropped. There it was—my once shattered, soaked, and busted-up laptop, looking practically brand new. I blinked, completely confused. "How the—what?! Are you serious right now?" I stammered, staring at the screen that was now perfectly intact, not a crack in sight. The keys were all there, gleaming like they'd just been installed, and the entire thing looked... functional.
April laughed at my reaction, clearly enjoying the shock on my face. "Told you my guy could handle it. Donnie's a wizard with tech, I swear," she said, placing the laptop on the desk in front of me. "I mean, come on. Doesn't it look amazing?" I nodded, still speechless. How was this even possible? Yesterday, the thing had been on its last legs—if that—and now it looked like I'd just picked it up from the store.
As I inspected it closer, I noticed something else—something extra. The laptop had a sleek new case on it, a deep, shiny purple that practically gleamed in the light. I ran my fingers over it, feeling the smooth texture. It wasn't just any case either. It fit perfectly, like it was custom-made for the laptop. "And, uh, Donnie added a little something extra," April said, pointing at the purple cover with a proud smile. "I guess he thought you'd like it. Pretty cool, right?"
"Cool?" I said, finally finding my voice again. "This is insane, April! I don't even know what to say. I thought it was beyond saving, but this—this is incredible!" I couldn't stop smiling, the excitement bubbling up inside me. The fact that the laptop was fixed was already blowing my mind, but the case? That was just the cherry on top. It looked so sleek, and knowing someone went the extra mile to make it special for me made it even better.
April shrugged like it was no big deal, though I could tell she was pleased with how impressed I was. "Donnie's got a flair for these things," she said casually. "Once he starts, there's no stopping him. I think he just wanted to make sure it stood out, y'know? And the purple's kind of his thing, so I guess he figured you'd rock it."
I laughed, still a little in awe of the whole situation. "Well, he nailed it. I love it. Seriously, April, thank you so much. I don't know what I would've done without this. School without a laptop is practically a death sentence." April gave me a playful nudge. "That's what friends are for, right?" she said. "Besides, now you can stop stressing and get back to owning your classes with this bad boy."
I couldn't help but feel a huge sense of relief. The weight of worrying about my broken laptop had been lifted, and now, not only was it fixed, but it was upgraded. This was more than I had hoped for, and I couldn't wait to show it off.
I looked at the laptop again, running my hand over the new purple case. As the excitement settled, curiosity crept in. "So... who exactly is this Donnie guy?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at April. "I mean, you keep mentioning him like he's just some casual tech guy, but no one fixes a laptop this well and adds their own touch without being a little special." I was half-joking, but also genuinely curious.
April just laughed, shaking her head like I'd said something ridiculous. "Oh, he's just some guy," she replied with a casual wave of her hand, leaning back in her chair. "You know, super smart, great with tech, but no big deal. He's been fixing stuff for me since I was a kid." Her tone was light, but there was something in her expression that told me she wasn't giving the full story.
I squinted at her, not buying it. "April, seriously? 'Just some guy' doesn't turn a destroyed laptop into this," I said, holding it up again. "Come on, spill. Who is this Donnie? Is he like a genius? A secret hacker? What's his deal?" I wasn't going to let her brush it off that easily. Whoever this Donnie was, he was clearly not your average tech-savvy dude.
April just grinned, shrugging like it was no big deal. "Trust me, he's just a guy, Y/N. A really, really smart guy, but still just a guy." She winked, clearly amused by my growing curiosity. "But don't worry. If you ever need something else fixed, he's your guy. Let's just say he's got a lot of... tools at his disposal." That last part sounded cryptic, and it only made me more curious, but I could tell she wasn't about to reveal much more. Whoever this Donnie was, he definitely wasn't just some guy.
I rolled my eyes but decided to let it go... for now. After all, I had a perfectly fixed laptop in my hands, and that was enough for the moment. I hugged April goodbye, thanking her one more time before heading to my next classes. Throughout the day, I couldn't resist showing off my newly revived laptop to my boyfriend and a few of my close friends. Their reactions were pretty much the same as mine had been—wide-eyed disbelief and questions about how in the world I'd gotten it fixed so perfectly. It felt good, carrying it around like it was a brand-new toy.
