Areum's days in New York had begun to feel more routine. School with Naomi had become a highlight in her otherwise monotonous life. Naomi's cheerful attitude had a way of brightening Areum's day, and though Areum still struggled to fully let go of her past, she found herself opening up a little more.
On this particular Monday, the bell rang to signal the start of History class. Areum shuffled into the room, her backpack slung over one shoulder. Naomi was already in her seat, waving excitedly for Areum to join her. The classroom was buzzing with the usual pre-class chatter, but Areum was more focused on her notes than on the noise.
"Hey, Areum!" Naomi said brightly as Areum took her seat. "Did you catch the new episode of that show last night? It was wild!"
Areum shook her head with a small smile. "Nah, I missed it. I've been catching up on some homework instead."
Naomi rolled her eyes playfully. "You're such a nerd. But that's why I like you!"
Before Areum could respond, their History teacher, Mr. Edwards, entered the room and started setting up for the day's lesson. He was an older man with a kind face, and he had a knack for making history feel alive. Today's topic was particularly interesting.
"Alright, class," Mr. Edwards began, "Today we're going to delve into the history of Chicago, specifically the South Side. We'll be discussing its economic struggles, its culture, and how it's shaped by historical events."
Areum's ears perked up at the mention of Chicago. She glanced at Naomi, who looked equally intrigued. Naomi leaned over and whispered, "Hey, isn't that where you used to live?"
"Yeah," Areum replied softly. "I used to be on the South Side. It's strange hearing about it here."
Mr. Edwards started the lecture, and Areum listened intently. The class discussed the impact of industrialization on the South Side, the rise of gang activity, and how historical events had shaped the community's present state. Areum found herself reflecting on her own experiences, the streets she knew so well, and the neighborhood she had left behind.
Mr. Edwards showed a slideshow with old photographs of the South Side. Areum's heart ached slightly as she saw images of familiar places. She recognized some of the streets and landmarks from her childhood. The photos brought back memories of the life she once had, and she tried to push away the pang of nostalgia.
Naomi noticed Areum's distant look and nudged her gently. "You okay?"
Areum nodded. "Yeah, just... thinking about home."
As Mr. Edwards continued, he highlighted the cultural and social aspects of the South Side, including its music, food, and community spirit. He also touched on the difficulties faced by residents, and how these challenges had been a part of Areum's own life.
Naomi seemed genuinely interested in the discussion. "Wow, Areum, I didn't know your old neighborhood was so... intense. It sounds like it's got a lot of history."
Areum shrugged. "Yeah, it does. It's not all bad, though. There's a lot of good in it too. I guess that's what makes it memorable."
The class continued, and by the end of the period, Areum was lost in thought. The discussion about the South Side had stirred up old memories and feelings. She had mixed emotions—pride for where she came from but also a sense of loss for what she had left behind.
As the bell rang and the students packed up their things, Naomi turned to Areum. "Hey, you wanna grab lunch? I could use a break from all this history stuff."
Areum nodded, grateful for the distraction. "Sure, let's go."
They headed to the cafeteria, chatting about their plans for the weekend and catching up on the latest gossip. Naomi's presence was a comforting distraction, and Areum found herself slowly easing into her new life, despite the lingering thoughts of her past.
As they sat down with their lunch trays, Naomi's cheerful demeanor helped lighten Areum's mood. The history lesson had been a reminder of where she had come from, but it also gave her a chance to reflect on how far she had come. For now, Areum decided to focus on the present, making the most of her new life in New York and the friendship she was building with Naomi.
Little did she know, Carl's life in Chicago was taking unexpected turns as well.
