Confrontation

They walked the path down from the house to the lake. It was late and quiet had fallen over the household and land. A full moon shown in the dark night sky.

"We are imbeciles." Erich decided. "It is freezing out here. We should be tucked up with a drink and book."

"I needed some air." Elsbeth drew in the clean, bracing mist coming off the lake. "It is beautiful here, Erich. You are most fortunate to have such a home."

"I am aware." he scanned the land with satisfied eyes. "It cost a fortune to run such an estate. I am determined to find other sources of income that the family always has control over our properties."

"You hold a title. Surely that alone ensures the safety of your estate."

"Shut the hell up." he sensed her needling, annoyed by it.

Elsbeth chuckled for his bad mood.

"My ass is freezing." the man complained. "Can we not go back to the house now."

"Your ass is cold, Sir?"

"I just stated as much, did I not."

"Tis a very nice ass, as asses go." she glanced at his backside, but it was covered by his long cloak.

"You, Madame...are a tart. No lady would state such a thing."

"I never claimed to be a Lady."

"Good, because you definitely are not one." Erich's mood was improving despite himself.

"Could that be the very reason you find favor with me?"

"I never find favor with you...only parts of you." he spared her a glare.

"I see." she mused thoughtfully. "There are no times you find yourself attracted to me?"

"When I am between your thighs." he confessed readily.

"Ah." she nodded. "You paint an interesting and concise picture." she strolled the walk absently. "You do not like me at all, then."

"I tolerate you on the best of days." The man kept his tone polite and inoffensive, hoping they only played the game both see to enjoy so much.

"You seemed concerned for my health this afternoon."

"I am continually concerned for your health. I fear I might strangle you with my bare hands, you see which would somewhat affect that state of health."

"If your hands are as cold as your ass, you might not be able to manage all that tight a grip though." she pointed out.

"I have over sixty acres here." he spread out his hand. "Surely there must be one inconspicuous spot I might hide a dead body."

"Careful with such talk, Sir." It was cautioned. "There is a Runner in-house. He seems very capable to me."

"He has met you." Erich pointed out the flaw in her thinking. "He would surely look the other way out of empathy for me if nothing else."

"You must learn to control your impulses, my Lord. It is a sign of immaturity." She demurred innocently.

The man made a sound in his throat. "I am controlling them, even as we speak."

He made his way down a slightly sloping incline, watching his step carefully for it was slippery in this area.

Elsbeth took the opportunity to scoop up a handful of nearby snow. Then she followed the man docilely, hiding her prize behind her back.
