John stood by the window, his gaze lost in the darkness outside. The moon cast an eerie glow over the small city of Harlem, illuminating the cramped houses and narrow streets. He felt trapped, like the city itself was closing in on him.
"John, what's the matter? Why are you out of bed? It's midnight!" Rosalind, his mother, spoke softly, walking towards him.
John turned, his curly hair mussed from sleep. "Mom, I just can't sleep here. I don't like this place. It's empty and filled with bad energies. I prefer our old home in Greenwich."
Rosalind's expression softened. She wrapped her arms around John, holding him close. "I know, sweetie. But there's nothing we can do. Our rent there is due, and we can't afford a renewal."
John's eyes welled up with tears. "But why did we have to move? Why did Dad lose his job?"
Rosalind's voice was gentle. "Sometimes, life takes unexpected turns. But we'll bounce back. Your father and I will work hard to give you and your sister the best life possible. Just bear with us for now; it's just a matter of time."
John nodded, feeling a bit reassured. "Okay, mom."
As they hugged, John's thoughts drifted back to the strange dreams he'd been having. Dark shadows, whispers in the night, and an eerie feeling of being watched.
"Mom?" John pulled back, his voice barely above a whisper. "Do you think this city is... haunted?"
Rosalind's smile faltered for a moment before she replied, "Of course not, sweetie. It's just your imagination. You'll adjust to our new home soon."
But John wasn't convinced.
The next morning, the family prepared for a day camping trip to the nearby park. Cooper, John's father, was determined to lift everyone's spirits.
As they packed the car, John noticed a strange symbol etched into the wall near their house. It seemed to pulse with a faint, otherworldly glow.
"Mom, look!" John pointed.
Rosalind followed his gaze, her expression uneasy. "Just graffiti, honey. Let's focus on our day out."
But John's mind lingered on the symbol, feeling an inexplicable connection.
As they drove away, John caught a glimpse of a figure watching them from the shadows. The figure vanished into thin air, leaving John wondering if he'd imagined it.
"Mommy, I swear I saw something," John said, his brow furrowed with concern.
Cooper chuckled. "John, it's nothing or probably just your imagination running wild."
The rest of the road trip was spent in silence, the tension palpable. John's parents seemed distracted, and his sister was engrossed in her gadgets.
Upon arriving at the park, John's family dispersed to enjoy the scenery. John, however, couldn't shake off the feeling. He wandered around, lost in thought.
"Mum, I need to pee," John announced, breaking the silence.
Rosalind turned, her eyes warm. "Don't stay long, sweetie."
"Got it!" John replied, hurrying off.
As he finished and turned to leave the restroom, he caught a glimpse of a figure darting past him. Quick and agile, the person vanished into the forest.
John's determination surged. Since his parents hadn't taken him seriously, he was determined to prove he wasn't daydreaming.
"I'll show them," John muttered to himself. He took off into the forest, chasing after the mysterious figure.
Little did John know, his life was about to take a dramatic turn, one that would change everything.
