“I'm sorry darling…please just wait here.”

looking into the bright eyes of the woman before me as she smiled, they seemed to glow in the dimly lit room.

The smell of smoke and iron was thick in the air but as she closed the cabinet doors, encasing me in darkness, I could only breathe in the musty scent and dust of the small space.

All I could hear was the sound banging from above from gunfire and the sounds of monsters screeching

whimpering I squeezed my eyes shut and covered my ears. “mommy!” I cried out quietly, wanting her to come back. I wanted her to hold and comfort me, to take us away from this scary place.

I didn't want to be left alone here!

-

Gasping awake I was jostled by the movement of the vehicle I was riding in as I laid leaned up against the door.

“about time you woke up xera! we’re almost there, so make sure you're alert and ready!” my commander in the seat next to me practically shouted.

“Yeah, yeah.” I groaned, rubbing my eyes tiredly.

‘it was that same dream again…’

looking out of the window I watched as the city buildings passed us by. The once clean and pristine structures were overrun with vines, ferns and all sorts of flora. sidewalks that used to be pathways for hundreds if not thousands of people to walk upon, were nearly completely destroyed, and overrun with the wild plant growth.

trees that looked like they could've been hundreds of years old grew between the cracks of the sidewalks and asphalt road, vines crawled up all along the sides of buildings and skyscrapers that were dozens of stories tall.

It always amazes me how the appearance of the monster's all those years ago could change the world so drastically, my memories of the world before the fall were blurry but I had seen plenty of pictures and videos of the world before the attack.

Bustling cities full of people now devoid of humans and overrun with plant life, suburban neighborhoods now fast overgrown forests, large commercial buildings like malls and airports, little more than ruins.

yet somehow even with all the destruction the world is still beautiful…

As the armored truck pulled into an ally and stopped. Everyone readied their weapons and climbed out.

stepping out I looked up the side of the building we were parked next to, seeing a giant tree's winding roots weaved through cracks and windows.

The soldiers around me were on high alert with their weapons raised as they scanned the area for any signs of danger.

“Alright, let's hurry up and get everything we need unpacked! let's go let's go!” the platoon leader shouted, and waved to the other two trucks with us.

Not paying any mind to them, something caught my attention from the corner of my eye. Instead of staying put like I should have while my commander started getting everyone gathered for a briefing I wandered off towards the street to get a better view.

“Alright everyone, we all know the risks of being out here! Nobody touches anything suspicious, no one messes with any kind of unnatural fauna or flora, the plants are just as dangerous as any monster! we want to avoid any casualties! if you hear, see, or even smell anything that doesn't seem right, you alert to it immediately! and last but not least, do not wander off alone! Do you understand?!”
