The atmosphere at the party had shifted dramatically after Soojin's unexpected arrival. Yoonji and Jungkook stood off to the side, the lively chatter around them feeling distant and muted. She could sense the tension in Jungkook's posture, the way his jaw clenched as he tried to shake off the encounter."Do you want to leave?" Yoonji asked softly, concerned for him. The last thing she wanted was for the evening to become unbearable for him.
Jungkook shook his head, though the weariness in his eyes told her he was struggling. "No, let's stay. I need to show her that I'm not affected by her."
Yoonji nodded, though she couldn't help but feel a twinge of unease. She had been excited to share this experience with Jungkook, but now, it felt like they were navigating a minefield.
As they rejoined the festivities, Yoonji focused on the conversations around her, trying to engage with colleagues and push aside the discomfort. Jungkook remained by her side, though his attention seemed split between the crowd and the lingering presence of his ex.
"Let's get some fresh air," Yoonji suggested, noticing how he seemed more tense with each passing moment.
They stepped outside onto a balcony that overlooked the city, the cool night air refreshing against her skin. Yoonji leaned against the railing, taking a deep breath, grateful for the moment of calm.
"Thanks for suggesting this," Jungkook said, running a hand through his hair, his expression softening as he looked at her. "I appreciate you being here, especially with... her showing up."
"Jungkook, I know that can't have been easy," Yoonji said gently. "But I'm here for you. You don't have to go through this alone."
He turned to face her, his eyes searching hers. "I didn't want you to see that side of my past. I thought I had moved on, but she always seems to know how to push my buttons."
Yoonji nodded, understanding the complexity of emotions he was grappling with. "You've come so far. Just because she's here doesn't mean you're still tied to that part of your life."
Jungkook took a deep breath, visibly trying to regain his composure. "You're right. I need to focus on what's in front of me. And that's you."
A small smile tugged at Yoonji's lips, feeling a warmth spread through her. "I'm glad you think so. I want to be part of your present, Jungkook."
Just then, a small group of executives stepped outside, interrupting their moment. Jungkook quickly masked his emotions, putting on his professional face. They joined in the conversation, but Yoonji could see that Jungkook's thoughts were elsewhere.
As they talked, Yoonji caught snippets of discussion about upcoming projects and partnerships. It was clear how respected Jungkook was among his peers, but she couldn't shake the feeling of tension that had lingered since Soojin's appearance.
Once the group finally dispersed, Yoonji turned to Jungkook, who seemed more withdrawn than before. "Do you want to go back inside?" she asked gently.
"Yeah, let's rejoin everyone," he replied, but his tone was flat, lacking the enthusiasm it had earlier.
As they walked back into the ballroom, Yoonji felt a weight in her chest. She didn't want to push him, but she could tell he was still processing everything.
"Can we talk later?" Yoonji asked, looking up at him. "I want to make sure you're okay."
Jungkook glanced down at her, a hint of gratitude in his eyes. "Of course. I just need a little time to sort through this."
As the evening wore on, Yoonji mingled with other guests while keeping an eye on Jungkook. She watched as he engaged with colleagues, his professional facade firmly in place. Yet, every time he glanced her way, she could see flickers of vulnerability beneath the surface.
Finally, after what felt like hours, the event began to wind down. Yoonji felt a mix of relief and disappointment; she had hoped the evening would solidify their connection but instead left her feeling unsettled.
As they stepped outside, the cool night air greeted them once more. Yoonji turned to Jungkook, ready to address what had been left unsaid. "Jungkook, I know tonight didn't go as we hoped—"
"Yoonji," he interrupted gently, "I'm sorry if my past affected our evening. I didn't want it to be like this."
"It's not your fault. Soojin was the one who made a scene. But I need you to know I'm here for you, no matter what happens."
He looked at her, his expression softening. "I really appreciate that. I care about you, and I want to be honest with you about everything."
Yoonji smiled, her heart swelling with hope. "Then let's talk about it when you're ready."
As they reached the car, Jungkook opened the door for her, and she slid into the seat. The drive back was filled with an easy silence, each lost in their thoughts.
Once they arrived at her apartment, Yoonji turned to Jungkook. "Thank you for tonight, despite everything."
"I'm glad you were with me," he said, sincerity in his voice. "Let's talk soon, okay?"
"Definitely," she replied, watching as he drove off, a mix of anticipation and uncertainty swirling in her heart.
Inside her apartment, Yoonji sank onto the couch, the events of the evening replaying in her mind. She felt a new resolve forming within her. No matter what shadows lurked from Jungkook's past, she was determined to stand by him and help him confront them.
Tomorrow would be a new day, and she hoped it would bring clarity and understanding.
