Spore Labs

In the Spore Labs, Lt. Paul Stamets paced briskly, his sharp eyes scanning the bustling activity around him. His team of science officers and engineers were diligently dismantling the incubation cradles and repurposing the mycelial pods, while the engineers purged various computer systems of the now-highly classified Cepheid Matrix data. The steady hum of the Spore Chamber served as a constant reminder of the delicacy of their work—technology capable of traversing dimensions was not something to be taken lightly.

Stamets barked orders across the lab, his voice authoritative and quick, leaving no room for hesitation. "Make sure those pods are stable before flushing the bio-filters! And you—get those incubation cradles offline immediately! We're not risking a cascade malfunction."

As he directed the flow of tasks, he noticed Ensign Tilly talking with a new addition to the crew, a short Ferengi science officer named Quorina. She stood out with her sharp, inquisitive eyes and a confident demeanor, making her presence known even amid the chaos. Quorina was methodically replacing dead mycelial spore canisters, regulating their growth and ensuring the Spore Chamber functioned at optimal levels.

Stamets observed the interaction between the two women from across the lab, his thoughts briefly wandering. Quorina had recently been assigned to Discovery, and her expertise in xenobiology and quantum mechanics had already earned her a reputation as a brilliant problem-solver. Still, the sudden influx of new faces had been... unsettling. His attention was interrupted by an engineer approaching him.

"Lieutenant," the engineer said, clearing his throat as he looked down at a data pad. "The security routers are ready to be scrubbed. Just waiting for your go-ahead."

Stamets waved a hand, signaling his approval. "Go ahead. Captain's orders." He paused, his gaze drifting back toward the lab, then asked, "Does the lab seem the same to you?"

The engineer blinked, confused by the question. "Same, sir? Yes... I mean, nothing's changed much except for the usual turnover. Why?"

Stamets smiled tightly, as if suppressing an uneasy thought. "Just curious. All these new faces, sometimes it feels like Discovery's... different."

The engineer gave a hesitant nod, unsure how to respond. "I suppose with all the new personnel, it can feel like that."

Stamets nodded, but his mind was already elsewhere, considering the implications of the recent changes. As the engineer returned to his work, Stamets noticed Tilly and Quorina working together across the room. Tilly seemed distracted; her usual bubbly energy tempered by something more subdued. The loss of her friend Volthi'Cha during the recent away mission had left a mark no doubt, though she was trying to mask it with work.

As he approached them, Tilly glanced up, managing a half smile. "Lieutenant, you know, it's weird how much I've missed this place. I thought after everything, it would be hard to come back."

Stamets frowned slightly, noting the shift in her tone. "You sure it's a good idea to be back so soon, Tilly? You've been through a lot."

Tilly waved him off, her voice a touch forced. "I needed the distraction. Things have been... odd."

Stamets cocked an eyebrow. "Odd? What kind of odd?"

"Just... odd," Tilly said shifting uncomfortably. "Nothing major. Anyway, have you met Quorina yet?"

Quorina, sensing the conversation turning toward her, straightened up and flashed a toothy grin. "Lieutenant, it's an honor. Working in the Spore Labs has been quite an experience already."

Stamets smiled politely, though his mind was still preoccupied. "Yes, Ensign, I've heard good things. Glad to have you on board." He glanced at Tilly, who seemed eager to change the subject. "So, Discovery's finally getting fully staffed, huh?"

"Yeah," Tilly said, her eyes darting around the lab. "It's about time. Can't believe we've been running with a skeleton crew for so long. Feels strange, doesn't it?"

Stamets nodded slowly, his gaze narrowing as he thought about it. "It's not like Starfleet to deploy us under-crewed, especially not for missions like these." He shot a glance at Quorina, then back to Tilly. "All these new faces... it's strange."

Quorina, who had been quietly listening, raised an eyebrow but said nothing. She had been aware of the tension aboard the Discovery ever since her arrival, though she attributed it to the high-stakes nature of their missions. However, Stamets' words made her wonder if there was something more going on beneath the surface.

"Strange how?" Tilly asked, her curiosity piqued.

Stamets shrugged, his voice low. "I don't know. It's just... a feeling. Maybe it's nothing."

Tilly gave him a sideways glance, her own discomfort bubbling up. "Yeah... maybe. Or maybe it's just all the stress from everything that's happened."

Stamets didn't reply immediately, instead looking around the lab once more. It wasn't just the new faces, though that was part of it. It was the nagging sensation that something was out of place, something fundamental to the ship's fabric had shifted. But what? He couldn't put his finger on it.

Quorina, sensing the heaviness of the conversation, cleared her throat and gestured to the bio-filters. "Lieutenant, if it helps, I've been double-checking the spore canisters and growth regulation. Everything's functioning at optimal levels. If anything's off, it's definitely not in the Spore Chamber."

Stamets blinked, snapping back to the present. "Right. Good work, Ensign."

As Quorina went back to her task, Tilly glanced at Stamets, her brow furrowed. "Do you think... it's just the new crew? Or is something else going on?"

Stamets hesitated, then shook his head. "I don't know. But we're Starfleet. We adapt." He looked at her, his expression softening slightly. "Just take care of yourself, Tilly. We need you."

Tilly smiled weakly. "Yeah, thanks, Lieutenant. I'm just glad I can make myself useful."
