Warning(s): Light dirty talk, Violence via choking, battle

Bucky was driving through the snowy streets of New York, consoling himself with how well he could make fun of Steve in full makeup. He held his breath as the navigation system mentioned one last left turn. He made the turn and let it go. He stopped the car and grabbed his jacket, checking himself in the rearview mirror before heading out into the darkness. He looked tired. He couldn't sleep much with all those damn nightmares. He rubbed his face with his hand before getting out of the car and saluted the agents waiting at the entrance to the compound in their armored vehicles. "Bucky Barnes, I'm here on behalf of Steve Rogers. Fury knows I'm here."

"A retinal scan is needed, Agent Barnes."

Bucky grumbled. "What else? Are you guarding the President of the United States?"

The man shrugged. "Fury has strict instructions."

Bucky was still muttering as he looked at the device the man held out to him. When the scan was confirmed, the door opened and he entered the grounds. A few minutes later, he had entered the foyer of the villa while hearing the sounds of Frank and Fury arguing. Every time he had to come here, he would look at the luxurious house that Elena claimed to have built with her fingernails and sigh, but now all he could think about was the bullet holes along the wall and the broken door. He walked past the Shield agents examining the scene and reached Fury and Frank. "Steve's on his way."

"Bucky, thank you for coming," Fury said in one breath. He glared at Frank. Frank rolled his eyes. "I told you it wasn't safe for her to live alone, didn't I? Over and over! She challenges bad guys in front of the whole world every day! And you do whatever she wants, all you do!"

Fury raised his eyebrows. "Am I being soft? Have you ever seen yourself talking to Elena?" He imitated the man's gravelly voice. "Elena, honey, little baby, kiddo."

Bucky tensed as Elena walked over. Shit. He was so used to squabbling with the girl that his body was starting to secrete cortisol just by hearing her.

"Sergeant Barnes," Elena nodded. "Did my dads drag you here too?" she asked, glaring at the two men.

"I'm not a Sergeant anymore, and I'm sick of telling you that for the thousandth time."

"Oh, sorry," Elena said, fake-flirting.—it was all too real when she was flirting with Steve though—"I keep forgetting your rank because you refuse to wear the Shield uniform."

She was trying to turn Fury against Bucky. Bucky was mentally warning himself to stay calm when Fury turned to the girl. "Elena, Bucky is here to protect you." She gave Bucky a half-glance. "As much as I don't like the fact that he's not wearing his uniform, you could try to be a little grateful."

"I don't need protection," Elena said, angrily. "I filled the guy with bullets! What are you talking about?"

Bucky laughed. "That's only because the guy underestimated his opponent. And it was only one person. Next time," he moved closer to her and touched the girl's collarbone with two fingers, "they're not going to take any chances and they're going to tell the next guys, they sent you a man and you filled him with bullets."

Fury wanted to intervene, but Frank filled the man with his eyes.

Elena was shaking with anger, her teeth clenched. "Is that experience talking, Sergeant?"

"Call me Sergeant again and I'll nail you to the ground."

Fury tried to open his mouth, but Frank grabbed the man by the arm and pulled him away. When they were out of earshot, Fury asked in surprise, "Are you going to let him talk to Elena like that?"
