2 days before fight...
Ming's day had been nothing short of exhausting. The board meeting had dragged on longer than expected, leaving him with a pounding headache. To top it off, two of his key business partners had suddenly pulled out of deals without any explanation, causing a ripple effect in his company's operations. He had spent the entire day trying to put out fires, one after another, and had barely had a moment to himself.
Now, at 2 a.m., he was finally on his way home. His house, located in a remote area far from the chaos of the city, was the only place where he could breathe. The cool night air felt refreshing as he drove his sleek black Mercedes through the quiet, winding roads. The silence was welcome after the hectic day, but it didn't do much to soothe his lingering frustration.
As he was halfway home, Ming's phone buzzed. Glancing at the screen, he saw it was his uncle-his father's friend. Ming's jaw tightened. He knew exactly why his uncle was calling at this hour.
Pulling over to the side of the road, Ming parked his car and turned off the engine. He stepped out, feeling the slight chill in the air as he walked over to the front of the car. The moonlight gleamed off the polished black paint of his Mercedes, a car he took great pride in. He hopped up onto the bonnet, leaning back casually as he answered the call.
"Uncle," he greeted, his tone smooth, polite, and just the right amount of respectful. It was all part of the game they played-pretending they cared about each other. Both knew the truth, though: this was just business, a tangled web of alliances and veiled threats.
"Ming," his uncle's voice came through the line, equally cordial, but laced with an undercurrent that Ming had long since learned to read. "I heard about the meeting today. Rough day for you, I take it?"
Ming smirked, looking up at the clear night sky. "Nothing I couldn't handle. These things happen, don't they? Partners pulling out-it's just business. We'll recover."
"That's the spirit," his uncle replied, his voice dripping with faux concern. "But you know how the board can get... they don't like surprises. It'll be tricky explaining this. You might need a little help smoothing things over."
Ming's eyes narrowed slightly, but his voice remained steady. "I'm sure I'll manage. The board trusts me, after all. I've always delivered results."
"Of course, of course. But I wouldn't mind lending a hand, you know. As family. I can handle the deal for you."
Ming chuckled softly, running his fingers along the edge of the bonnet. "Family. Right. Well, I appreciate the offer, Uncle, but I'm sure it's unnecessary. I've got things under control."
There was a brief silence on the other end before his uncle's voice returned, just as smooth. "Very well. But don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything. We're in this together, after all."
"We are," Ming agreed, though they both knew that was only true when it suited them. The conversation ended with a few more pleasantries, both of them playing their roles to perfection.
After hanging up, Ming let out a long breath. 'What a joke.' He loved this twisted dance they did, pretending like they had each other's backs when, in reality, they were constantly circling each other, waiting for a moment of weakness.
