**Chapter 14: No other Choice**
---
Amara sat by the window in the dimly lit room, her hands trembling as she stared out into the night. The town below was quiet, peaceful even, but inside her, a storm raged. Her powers, now amplified, surged just beneath the surface. It took all her focus to keep them in check.
She glanced at the small table in front of her, and with a simple thought, willed the glass to move. It wobbled slightly before sliding a few inches. Amara exhaled, both in relief and frustration. These powers were a part of her now, but controlling them felt like trying to hold back a tidal wave. The strength—the ability to move objects, even people—came so naturally, but with it came the ever-present hunger. The bloodlust.
Her eyes clouded with worry as her thoughts drifted to her mother. She had left her behind with nothing but a note. No explanation, no goodbye. Just a few scribbled words about running away, knowing it would leave her mother heartbroken and confused. But how could she explain the truth? That she had been turned into something else, something monstrous?
The thought of her mother searching for her, filled with worry, twisted Amara’s insides. She knew her mother was probably still hoping, still looking for signs of where she might have gone.
Lucien appeared beside her, his movements silent and graceful, as if he could sense her distress. "You're thinking about her again," he said softly.
Amara nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "She’s all alone, Lucien. I abandoned her. She must think I’m... I don’t know, lost, or worse. And I can’t even tell her the truth."
Lucien’s gaze softened, and he gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "You did what you had to, Amara. You couldn’t stay—not like this. The bloodlust would have consumed you, and that would have put her in even more danger."
"I know, but..." Amara bit her lip, fighting the tears. "She’s my mother. She must be so worried. I can’t bear the thought of her looking for me, wondering where I’ve gone."
Lucien crouched down in front of her, his eyes meeting hers. "You don’t have to worry about her. I promised you, Amara—I’ll take care of her. Even if I have to do it from a distance, I’ll make sure she’s safe, that she’s okay."
Amara searched his eyes, looking for reassurance. Lucien had always kept his word, but the ache in her chest wouldn’t fade. "How can I live with this?" she whispered. "With the guilt, knowing she’s out there alone?"
Lucien’s fingers lightly brushed her cheek. "You have to focus on controlling your powers, on taming what’s inside you. When the time is right, you’ll see her again. Until then, trust me to watch over her. I’ll protect her with my life, Amara."
Her heart ached, but she nodded. There was no other choice.
