Devi Vishwakumar stood in front of Princeton's vast, ivy-covered walls, her heart thudding with a mixture of excitement and nerves. It felt surreal—a dream she'd chased since she was old enough to know what Ivy League meant. Yet here she was, standing in the heart of her ambition, bags in hand, and with the daunting prospect of independence hanging over her like a thick cloud.
"Ivy League, baby," she whispered to herself, trying to channel confidence into her words. But beneath the surface, there was a gnawing sense of uncertainty—college was a whole new world. No more John McEnroe commentary in her head, no more high school dynamics. This was a fresh start, and she wasn't sure if she was ready for it.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket. A smile stretched across her face as she saw Ben's name light up the screen.
"Hey, how's Columbia?" Devi asked, still scanning the courtyard for her dorm.
"I'm literally sweating through my shirt," Ben groaned dramatically. "My dorm is on the fifth floor, no elevator. I think I'm going to die here."
Devi chuckled, even though she missed him already. They were only an hour and a half apart, but for some reason, that distance felt like worlds away. This was the first time they'd be separated for more than a couple of days since they started dating.
"Don't die. You still owe me dinner next weekend."
"I'm planning on surviving purely for that. How's Princeton?"
Devi looked around, taking it all in—the lush green lawns, the grand archways, the buzz of students milling about with their parents.
"It's... insane. I'm still trying to find my dorm. There's so much going on, I feel like I'm going to get swallowed up in it."
Ben laughed softly. "You'll own that place by next week. You always do."
His words comforted her more than she expected. But just as she was about to respond, a voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Are you Devi?" A girl with bright red hair and a clipboard walked up, a big smile plastered on her face. "You're my roommate!"
"Oh, um, yeah!" Devi stammered, quickly ending her call with Ben. "I'll text you later, okay?"
"Yeah, good luck. I love you."
Devi's heart skipped a beat. Even though they'd said it a dozen times by now, it still felt new and exciting. "Love you too."
As she hung up, she turned her attention to her new roommate, who was eyeing her curiously.
"I'm Maddie," the girl said with a grin. "I think we're in Stanford Hall together."
Devi nodded and followed Maddie across the bustling campus, trying to shake off the strange feeling in her stomach. Part of her was excited—this was everything she'd worked for. But another part, the part she didn't like to admit, was scared.

Moving into the dorm was both exhilarating and exhausting.** By the time Devi had finished unpacking, she was sweaty, exhausted, and still reeling from the overwhelming newness of it all. Maddie, who seemed friendly enough, was busy arranging her side of the room with an alarming amount of motivational posters and fairy lights.
"Ready to explore?" Maddie asked, practically bouncing on her feet.
Devi hesitated. Her bed looked so inviting after the long day of travel and unpacking, but something inside her pushed her to say yes. After all, this was college—wasn't she supposed to be adventurous?
"Sure, why not?" Devi replied, grabbing her phone and keys.
As they stepped out of the dorm, the campus was alive with activity. Freshmen moving in, parents saying tearful goodbyes, upperclassmen lounging on the grass. It was a lot to take in.
"So, where are you from?" Maddie asked as they walked.
"Sherman Oaks, California," Devi said, keeping her voice light. "It's... different from here."
"I bet," Maddie replied. "I'm from Connecticut. So this isn't too far for me. I can still go home whenever."
Devi felt a pang of homesickness at that. She couldn't just hop on a train or drive home like Maddie could. Her mom, her friends, her life in California—it all felt so far away now.
They made their way to one of the student lounges, a large open space filled with couches, ping-pong tables, and study groups already forming.
"This is Sofia," Maddie introduced, waving over another girl who was lounging on one of the couches. Sofia looked up from her laptop and smiled.
"Hey, new roommate?"
"Yep," Devi said, sliding into the seat across from her. "Devi."
Sofia gave her a quick nod. "Princeton's not as intimidating as it seems. After the first few weeks, you'll feel like you've been here forever."
**---
Later that night, as Devi lay in bed staring at the ceiling, she felt the weight of the day settle on her chest.** Princeton was amazing, but she missed Ben already. She missed the familiarity of her old friends, even though they hadn't been as close since high school ended.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She grabbed it, hoping it was Ben, but instead, it was a message from her mom.
Nalini: "Call me when you get a chance. We need to talk about Pati."
Devi's heart sank. Something was wrong.
The first day of college should've felt like the start of something new and exciting, but as Devi stared at her phone, her thoughts spiraled. Pati was getting older, and the thought of something happening to her while Devi was away made her stomach twist.
Pushing her emotions down, Devi turned her phone screen off and rolled over. Tomorrow would be better. It had to be.
