The day after moving in, Devi woke up to the sound of her phone buzzing insistently on her desk. Groggy and disoriented, she squinted at the screen, seeing her mom's name flash in bright letters. She quickly swiped to answer, suddenly remembering the conversation from the night before.
"Hey, Mom," Devi said, her voice still thick with sleep.
"Devi, honey! I'm glad you picked up," her mom replied, the warmth of her voice grounding Devi even from miles away. "I need to talk to you about Pati."
Devi's heart sank at the mention of her grandmother. "Is she okay?"
"She's had a few health issues lately. Nothing too serious, but we should discuss it. I don't want you to worry too much while you're away at college," her mom said gently.
"Can't we talk about this later? I just moved in, and I'm trying to settle down," Devi replied, a twinge of frustration creeping in.
"Of course. Just remember we're here for you. I know it's a lot to handle," her mom reassured her.
Devi sighed, trying to push aside her worries. "I know. I'll call you later. Love you!"
"Love you too, sweetheart. Have a great day," her mom said before hanging up.
As Devi hung up, she took a moment to collect her thoughts. She felt the familiar mix of anxiety and sadness wash over her. With her grandma's health issues looming over her, she wanted nothing more than to dive headfirst into this new chapter of her life and forget about the weight of her responsibilities back home.
Just then, her roommate, Maddie, burst through the door, her arms laden with books and art supplies. "Ready for orientation?" she chirped, her energy infectious.
"Yeah, I guess so," Devi said, forcing a smile. "Just had a call with my mom."
"Everything okay?" Maddie asked, concern creeping into her tone.
"Yeah, just family stuff," Devi replied, waving it off. "I'm ready to make some new friends!"
Maddie beamed. "That's the spirit! Let's go!"
At the Orientation Session
The auditorium was buzzing with excitement as students filled the seats. Devi sat next to Maddie, who was eagerly taking notes, while she fidgeted with her phone, her mind drifting back to the conversation with her mom.
"Devi!" Maddie whispered, nudging her elbow. "Pay attention!"
Devi blinked, forcing herself to focus as the dean began his speech. She felt the nervous energy of everyone around her, and despite her anxiety, a flicker of hope sparked within her. This was a fresh start, a chance to reinvent herself.
After the session, the students poured out into the courtyard, and Devi felt a wave of nervousness wash over her. Maddie immediately gravitated toward the art club booth, pulling Devi along with her.
"Come on! Let's sign up!" Maddie exclaimed, practically bouncing on her feet.
As they approached the booth, Devi's eyes lit up at the sight of Sofia, the girl with curly hair and a friendly smile. "Hey, Sofia!" Devi greeted, her heart lifting at the familiar face.
"Devi! So good to see you again! Are you thinking about joining the art club?" Sofia asked enthusiastically.
"Definitely! Maddie and I were just talking about it," Devi said, her spirits rising.
"Awesome! We've got some fun projects lined up. You should totally come to our first meeting!" Sofia said, her eyes sparkling with passion.
As they chatted, Devi felt herself warming to Sofia's energy. The connection they had established during their first encounter blossomed, and Devi found herself laughing and opening up more than she expected.
