As winter approached, Devi felt a newfound sense of clarity following her heartfelt conversation with Ben. The lingering tension between her and her friends, particularly Fabiola and Eleanor, weighed heavily on her mind. She realized it was time to confront her feelings and open up about the struggles she had been facing.

That evening, sitting in her cozy Princeton dorm, Devi picked up her phone, her heart racing as she dialed Fabiola's number. She could feel the weight of their strained friendship pressing down on her.

"Hey, Devi! What's up?" Fabiola answered, her voice bright.

"Can we FaceTime with Eleanor? I really need to talk to you both," Devi said, her tone serious.

"Of course! I'll get her on the line," Fabiola replied.

Within moments, Eleanor's face appeared on the screen, her smile instantly soothing Devi's nerves. "Hey, girl! What's going on?"

"Hey! I just wanted to reach out because I've been thinking a lot lately. I feel like I haven't been honest with you guys, and I really need to apologize," Devi said, her heart racing.

Eleanor furrowed her brow. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, I've been struggling with the transition to college life and the pressure of everything—school, my family, my relationship with Ben. I didn't want to burden you both, but I see now that it's made me pull away. I didn't mean to make you feel left out," Devi admitted, her voice cracking slightly.

Fabiola nodded, her expression softening. "We've felt that too, Devi. It's been hard being apart, and I think we all could have communicated better."

Eleanor leaned closer to her screen. "Yeah, I didn't want to push you away, but it felt like you were making new friends, and we were just... stuck in the past."

"I know it's been tough with the distance and everything," Devi continued. "But you two mean the world to me. I don't want to lose that connection. I was so focused on my own fears that I didn't see how it was affecting you both."

Fabiola reached out, though they were miles apart, as if the distance could be bridged by their shared vulnerability. "We're here for you, Devi. We always will be. I think we just need to work on being more open with each other."

"Yeah," Eleanor added. "Let's promise to check in more often, no matter how busy we get. We've got each other's backs."

Feeling the weight lift off her shoulders, Devi smiled back, grateful for their understanding. "Thanks, you guys. I really needed to hear that."

As the conversation deepened, Devi realized how much she had missed sharing her thoughts with her friends. They reminisced about their high school days, laughing over silly memories and the bond that had carried them through even the toughest times. The warmth of their connection reminded her that distance couldn't erase the friendships that mattered most.

Later that night, as Devi prepared for bed, she felt inspired to take the honesty a step further. She picked up her phone again, this time dialing her mom's number. Taking a deep breath, she waited as the call connected.

"Hey, Devi! How's everything?" her mom answered, her voice brightening Devi's mood.

"Hey, Mom. I've been thinking a lot about us and wanted to talk about Pati and everything else going on," Devi started, her heart racing.

"Oh? What's on your mind?" her mom asked, her tone shifting to concern.

"I guess I've just been feeling overwhelmed with everything—school, my friends, and worrying about Pati. I don't want to lose her like I lost Dad," Devi admitted.

Her mom's voice softened with understanding. "I know how you feel, Devi. I worry about Pati every day too. It's hard seeing her health decline, and I sometimes feel helpless. I can't imagine what it must be like for you, feeling so far away."

"I feel so scared," Devi confessed, tears welling up in her eyes. "What if something happens to her? I don't know how to deal with that."

"We'll face this together, Devi. Pati loves you and thinks about you all the time. Being there for her means more than you know. Just remember, it's okay to feel lost and scared. You're not alone in this," her mom reassured her, her voice steady and comforting.

After their conversation, Devi felt a renewed sense of hope. She knew that being honest with herself and her loved ones was the key to navigating the challenges ahead.

The next day, as she walked to class, a weight had lifted off her shoulders. With Fabiola and Eleanor by her side, and a clearer understanding of her relationship with her mom, Devi felt ready to face whatever came next.
