The city sprawled beneath me, a glittering sea of lights stretching far into the horizon. From up here, everything looked small—manageable, controllable. I leaned against the glass window of my penthouse, my empire beneath my feet. The same empire I built with my own hands, brick by brick, deal by deal, and one sleepless night after another.

I refused to take my father's company. Archer Groups was never meant for me. A legacy built on cold business moves, hostile takeovers, and decisions I had no part in. No, I wanted more. I needed more. And I made it happen. Volkov Industries became one of the most powerful conglomerates in the country, and it was all mine.

But success has its price, doesn't it?

I rubbed my temples, feeling the familiar ache building. Meetings, negotiations, strategies—my life had become an endless cycle of control, power, and progress. Yet, recently, something had felt off. There was a tension in the air I couldn't quite shake. Rivals were always out there, looking for the first crack in my defenses, the first sign of weakness.

This felt different, though.

A name had been circulating through my network for weeks now. Zayden Meadows. COO of Z Enterprises. Cold. Calculating. The kind of man who wouldn't flinch if the world fell apart, as long as it was falling the way he planned. He wasn't like the others. Something about him... unsettled me. There was no clear motive behind his recent moves, but he'd been circling my company like a predator.

I hate predators.

A soft chime pulled me from my thoughts. My phone. I picked it up, the screen glowing with a new message from Victor, my head of security.

We need to talk. There's been movement.

I frowned, my heartbeat quickening. I'd been expecting something like this. Whoever was behind the shadowy threats looming over Volkov Industries, they were getting bolder.

I tapped a quick reply. Be at my office in ten.

As I set the phone down, a cold chill ran down my spine.

Zayden Meadows. His name lingered in my mind, like a puzzle piece that didn't quite fit, but I couldn't ignore. I had faced obstacles before—competitors, jealous partners, power-hungry executives. But him? He felt different, like a storm waiting on the horizon, a force I couldn't fully predict or control.

Still, I was Sofia Volkov. Control was what I did best.

With one final glance at the city, I turned away from the window, my footsteps echoing on the marble floor as I headed toward my office. Whatever was coming for me, whatever he was planning, I would be ready.

I always was.
