The moon hung high and full in the night sky, casting a silver glow over the forest as Mistclan made their way to the Gathering. Dawnpaw's paws tingled with excitement as she padded beside her clanmates, her eyes wide with anticipation. Tonight was her first Gathering, and she could hardly contain her eagerness to see the other clans and hear about their lives.
"Remember," Ravenflight's steady voice murmured beside her, "a Gathering is about peace. No fighting, no arguments. We go to share news, not to start trouble."
Dawnpaw nodded, though her mind was racing with curiosity about the other apprentices she might meet. She had heard so many stories about the other clans—Rainclan, Sunclan, and Stormclan—but this would be her first time seeing them all together in one place.
As Mistclan approached the Gathering place, the Five Rocks came into view. The massive stones jutted out from the earth, towering over the clearing like ancient sentinels. Each rock represented one of the clans, with the fifth rock, the largest, standing in the center as a neutral symbol of unity. Around the stones, the clearing was already buzzing with activity as cats from the other clans mingled and shared news.
Dawnpaw's breath caught in her throat as she entered the clearing. Cats of every color and size were gathered beneath the towering rocks, their pelts shimmering in the moonlight. The sight was overwhelming, yet thrilling. She spotted Ravenflight moving toward the center, where the leaders would soon address the clans, but her attention was drawn to the other apprentices, grouped together in small clusters.
Her heart raced as she caught sight of a few apprentices from Duskclan standing near the edge of the clearing. She hesitated for a moment, then, taking a deep breath, padded over to introduce herself.
"Hi," Dawnpaw meowed, her voice a little more high-pitched than she intended. "I'm Dawnpaw, from Mistclan."
The apprentices turned to look at her, their eyes curious but not unfriendly. One of them, a sleek black tom with bright green eyes, dipped his head. "I'm Nightpaw, from Rainclan," he replied. "And this is Thornpaw and Moonpaw." He gestured to a light brown tabby tom and a ginger she-cat standing beside him.
"First Gathering?" Moonpaw asked, her amber eyes gleaming with understanding.
Dawnpaw nodded, her excitement bubbling up. "Yeah. It's amazing—there are so many cats!"
Thornpaw purred. "It feels like the whole forest is here, doesn't it? I still remember my first Gathering—it felt like my fur was going to stand on end the whole time."
Nightpaw flicked his tail in agreement. "Same here. The first one is always the most exciting. You never forget it."
Dawnpaw relaxed a little as the conversation flowed. She was relieved to find that the other apprentices weren't as intimidating as she had imagined. In fact, they seemed just as curious about her as she was about them.
"So, how's your training going?" Thornpaw asked. "I heard Mistclan's been really active lately."
Dawnpaw's eyes brightened. "It's going great! I just went on my first hunting patrol today, and I caught a mouse. My mentor, Ravenflight, is tough, but I'm learning a lot."
Nightpaw's ears perked up at the mention of Ravenflight. "Ravenflight's your mentor? That's amazing! She's one of the best fighters in the forest."
Dawnpaw puffed out her chest a little, feeling a surge of pride. "Yeah, she's incredible. I'm lucky to have her."
Nightpaw tilted his head curiously. "What about your siblings? Are they apprentices too?"
Dawnpaw nodded. "Yes! Amberpaw and Duskpaw. Amberpaw's mentor is Bloodstare, and Duskpaw's is Breezecloud. They're both really excited about training."
Thornpaw exchanged a glance with Moonpaw, his whiskers twitching. "Bloodstare, huh? I've heard she's pretty strict."
Dawnpaw chuckled. "Amberpaw says the same thing, but I think it'll make her stronger."
Just then, a group of apprentices from Sunclan approached, their pelts glowing like flames in the moonlight. One of them, a large golden tabby tom, flicked his ears in greeting. "Mind if we join in?"
Nightpaw nodded. "Go ahead."
"I'm Lionpaw," the golden tom said with a friendly nod. "And this is Brightpaw and Flamepaw."
The conversation soon turned to the usual apprentice chatter—who had the strictest mentor, who had caught the most prey, and who had the most difficult battle training sessions. Dawnpaw listened eagerly, soaking in every detail. It was fascinating to hear how training differed between the clans, and yet, how similar their struggles and successes were.
As the apprentices talked, Dawnpaw found herself warming up to the other cats. She had been nervous at first, but now it felt as if they were all just apprentices—no matter which clan they came from. It was a comforting thought, especially when the clans were usually seen as rivals.
Suddenly, a yowl echoed across the clearing, silencing the chatter. Dawnpaw's ears perked up as the leaders of the four clans leaped onto the Five Rocks, their pelts shining in the moonlight. Soulstar, Mistclan's leader, took his place on one of the stones, his sleek black fur rippling as he looked down over the gathered cats.
Beside him stood Rainclan's leader, a silver tabby named Silverstar, along with Sunclan's leader,Stripestar, a flame-colored tom, and Stormclan's leader, Froststar, a white tom with icy blue eyes.
Dawnpaw's breath caught as she looked up at the leaders. This was what the Gathering was truly about—coming together in peace, under the watchful gaze of Starclan, to share news and keep the balance between the clans.
Soulstar was the first to speak, his voice calm but strong as it echoed through the clearing. He shared news of Mistclan's recent hunts and border patrols, mentioning the apprentices' progress with pride. Dawnpaw's heart swelled as she listened to her leader, knowing that her clan was strong.
The other leaders spoke in turn, sharing news of their own clans—new kits, successful hunts, and the occasional skirmish with foxes or badgers. No one mentioned any trouble between the clans, and for that, Dawnpaw was grateful. Tonight, at least, peace reigned.
As the Gathering came to a close and the clans began to disperse, Dawnpaw lingered for a moment, her gaze sweeping across the clearing. She had met apprentices from other clans, learned new things, and experienced the unity of the clans under the stars. It was a night she would never forget.
Windpaw appeared beside her, his eyes bright with excitement. "Your first Gathering, huh? How was it?"
Dawnpaw smiled, her heart full. "It was incredible. I can't wait for the next one."
Windpaw purred. "There's nothing quite like it, is there?"
As they made their way back to Mistclan, Dawnpaw glanced up at the full moon, her thoughts swirling with everything she had learned that night. The clans were different, but they were all connected by the same sky, the same stars. And for the first time, Dawnpaw felt like she was truly part of something much bigger than herself.
