Okay guys. I feel like I owe you readers an explanation.
The story is not supposed be one that is liked but one that is seen as an example or lesson.
You are not supposed to like the characters. That is the point.
The book teaches you that you cannot change the way a person loves.
You cannot change the way a person thinks.
It is up to you to decide how you want to move with or WITHOUT this person.
In Raya's case, she remains manipulated and confused about her "love" for Jamal. She's dumb minded and conflicted. She doesn't know what real love is due to past men so she truly believes that Jamal loves her.
Jamal is handsome, yes and he cares for her in a way most men would not even if they don't have any issues. But looks can be deceiving and he is not a good man. A good father, nor a good partner.
He has problems.
Love is not always a good thing.
Raya is attracted to him and feels she owns him something so she stays and obey
Jamal feels like he owns her so he doesn't see himself as being wrong for doing the things that he does in the book.
All love, is not good love.
And all love stories doesn't end with the a white picket fence and fairytales. Some are made to be a disaster before it even starts.
