Prologue
It was the start of a truth she never knew.
A young girl, around 9 at the time, sat down to watch the news in her house. It was a new story that shook her to her very core. The reporter told about a small child who was found dead in an abandoned mall. She was missing a hand and all the tv could show were her two dirty shoes. The town she grew up in was disgustingly sick; that is what she learned that day. But who was she to be afraid? She lived in PinesTown Washington all her life, so she was pretty used to stories like these popping up by now.
She heard A knock coming from the front door. Her mother didn't have any mail coming in, and it's far too late for any newspapers to arrive at the door. Curious, the girl walked to the door and opened it. The hot heavy breeze of the late-night summer touched her skin as she made contact with the outside. To her surprise there was no one there, until she looked down to see a small kitten, curled up within a box.
It was the day she met her cat, Little Toonie. And from that day forward, it was the start of lifelong friendships and heartfelt trials that she would experience as she got older. But it was also the start of something bigger as well. Something terrifying. Something she had no clue about.
At least not yet. She was too young to understand, but one day she will.
That night, she heard sirens for the first time.
