It had been a few hours since the group left to go get Glenn and Maggie back, and Maisie was doing everything she could to keep herself distracted. Beth helped her with that, as currently they both were sitting on her bed talking to baby Judith.
Axel came in and sat beside Beth, looking down at the girl. "You are good with her." He praised the blonde teenager, who gave him a smile in return. "You got little sisters?"
"No." Beth shook her head.
Carl was also in the cell, standing off to the side as he always did. Even though he was one of the youngest, just above Maisie and Judith, he seemed to want to be in charge whenever Rick was gone.
"How old are you, anyway?" Axel questioned.
"Seventeen." Beth mumbled.
"Seventeen, interesting." Axel smiled and nodded, watching the teen close until Carol came over. Maisie felt uncomfortable, but she just kept her head down and watched Judith.
"May I speak with you?" Carol said rather demandingly like she was angry.
"Me?" Axel raised his brow, conflicted. Carol just gave him a silent nod and he followed her out the cell. "I'll be right back." He said.
Eventually they got bored and moved out, and Maisie decided she wanted to do some coloring so she grabbed her book and sat on the floor beside Beth and Carl who were on the steps, using her crayons carefully— trying her hardest not to snap them.
That's when Hershel came over in his crutches. Maisie liked how she could now hear when he was coming. "Finally got Judith to sleep." He said.
"How are we with formula?" Carl asked.
"We have enough to last us another month." Hershel responded as he stopped up beside the staircase.
Carl nodded, "I'll take Carol for some more at the end of the week."
"Your dad and the others will be back by then." Beth quipped to make the boy feel better. Maisie pressed her lips into a thin line, she liked to keep hope though.
"We don't know that." Carl proclaimed. "Right now Maisie and Judith are the only family I got."
Maisie's head snapped up at the sound of a very loud high pitched scream that belonged to a woman. "What was that?" Beth asked.
"That was from inside." Hershel stated.
"Was that Carol?" Carl asked.
"She's out keeping watch in the guard tower with Axel." Hershel shook his head as Carl loaded his gun. Maisie shot up, grabbing her own gun from her belt as a precaution.
"What if they came back in for something?" Beth reasoned.
"Still screaming." Maisie mumbled, panic drawing on her face.
"Let's check the tower, see if they're there." Hershel said quickly, trying to defuse the panic.
"How could anyone else get in?" Beth tried to think, utterly confused.
"There's lots of ways." Maisie said.
"The tombs are filled with walkers that wandered in from outside." Hershel's face was also worried, though he was trying not to show it to the children. Maisie could see right through it. "Someone else could've done the same thing."
"I'm going." Carl jumped up, shoving extra bullets into his pockets.
"I can't let you go down there." Hershel shook his head, holding up his crutch to stop the boy.
"He's not going alone." Maisie said, chewing on her lip. She was really nervous, but she didn't want him going by himself. Hershel sighed, giving in as he let Carl pass and both siblings took off down the hall.
