Food: Jaune Tries Tacos

"It's nice to know food trucks are also a thing on Earth," Jaune said while helping carry the food they just ordered to the table the owners of the truck set up on the side. Taking a seat, he pointed to the plate before him and asked Jessica, "What are these ones again?"

"Carne asada tacos," she answered.

"What does that mean?"

"It basically just means roasted meat," she shrugged. "Most of the time it's actually grilled steak of some kind."

"Alright... How do I eat these?"

While excited to try tacos, he had no idea what the etiquette was for eating them. To him, all he saw was a plate of cooked meat on some hot floppy yellow disks. Still finding it funny how something so widely recognized on her world was so alien to him, Jessica smiled.

"Just fold them," she picked up the edges of one tortilla. She carefully folded it over to secure the meat, "and then you eat them like a hot dog."

Deciding to have fun, Jaune got an idea.

"What's a hot dog?" he asked.

"Oh!" Jessica was thrown off. She didn't think she would have to explain more than one culinary concept today. "Uh, it's like a- a sausage that's made from different animals, and then you cook it and put it in a-" she began explaining, but then she saw the smile Jaune failed to hold back.

"Pfft! Hahaha! I'm sorry, I can't-"

Feeling embarrassed at how easily she fell for his joke, she looked down avoiding his gaze, lest she started cracking up too. "... Just eat your tacos." Unfortunately, she couldn't avoid looking back at his smile, and she broke down laughing too.

Jaune carefully attempted to do what Jessica showed him. He lifted the edges, folded, and then brought it up to his mouth. Tasting the food, the softness of the tortilla balanced the almost crunchy meat.

"So...?" Jessica pushed for an answer on what he thought of one of her favorite foods growing up.

"Hmm," he thought over the flavor of it. "A little... oily?"

"Here," Jessica excitedly began opening the small bag of toppings she got from the table in front of the order window. "Try it with all this." Jessica began adding the bits of white onions, some cilantro, and finally, she added a squeeze of lime. She presented the tacos with added toppings to him. "Gives it a little more texture and acidity."

Taking another bite, Jaune was mesmerized at how it was almost a completely different taste to before.

Jessica had taken a bite of her own order and smiled at the clear display of enjoyment Jaune had. "Good right? Here, try these ones." She pushed her plate to Jaune for him to try.

Taking a bite, Jaune noticed something different about these tacos. "Mm. It's chewy-er. What's in these ones?"

"These are Tacos de lengua," replied Jessica.

Not knowing anything about Spanish or Mexican food, Jaune asked, "And what does that mean?"

Jessica's smile was almost evil. Wanting to get back for the hot dog joke earlier, she was excited to see his reaction to what kind of meat was in these particular tacos. "These are made with the cow's tongue," she said mischievously.

Jaune paused for a moment. Then he thought of all the weird things in the Ever After. All the things that didn't seem like food, and all the things that looked like food, but weren't. Trial and error of what was and wasn't edible. Honestly? Beef tongue seemed normal by comparison.

"Eh. I've eaten weirder."
