"You look like you saw a ghost."

"I did."

My personal guard and best friend, Rave, was quizzing me about a face I'd never thought I'd see again. I thought she died. I'd mourned her loss. I went to our meetup place every day for a year after she died. But there was no miracle that she was still alive. Yet here she was. I told myself if Zee were alive, she would've come to our spot.

Spoiler alert, she never did. Zee was the only person I'd ever given my heart to, and when she died, my heart died with her.

But she wasn't fucking dead, was she? She was out, probably living the high life. She didn't even pretend to remember our past. She acted like she'd never seen me before. But how could she forget me?

Maybe if we only met twice. But we met almost every day for years. All that for her to pretend not to know me. I guess she was too good for me. I clenched my fists. When she'd 'died' my whole life ended. I became a shell of who I used to be. She did it to me. Made me the monster I am.

No. Anger clouded all rational thoughts. If she could ruin my life, I could ruin hers. If she didn't get a key or got one that gave her money, I'd keep her here. I was a king, I could do whatever the fuck I wanted. I would turn away the person who got my hand in marriage and get another person once I was done with Zee. I'd discard her. Forget about her. Just like she did with me.

"Valentino. Are you alive?" Rave asked, poking my shoulder.

"Did you find out why she was fighting?" I asked.

"Who?"

"The girl!"

"Oh, yeah. She was grabbing a pen from him."

Really? She fought a guy and made a huge commotion in my presence over a pen? Another way she was mocking me. I took a few deep breaths to calm myself.

"Valentino. You keep zoning out, are you sure you're okay?" Rave asked again.

"Yes, yes. I'm fine,"I said, waving a hand in the air nonchalantly. Then I headed to my room, sighing and putting my head into my hands.

I was still beyond shocked on how Zee was alive.
I was hurt, I was angry, and I wanted revenge. Because it wasn't fucking right for her to leave and let me mourn. If she'd just told me she didn't want to hang out anymore. It would hurt, but I would know she's happy and at least alive. Tears started to form in my eyes, but I wiped them away angrily.

"Why, Zee? Why? I turned into a monster when you left. A monster. You could've stopped it. I'll show you what a fucking monster is," I growled, determination evident from my tone of voice. A plan started to form in my mind. If she could look me in my eyes and pretend she didn't know me, I could do the same. Two could play that game. I would do just as she did. Act as if I'd never seen her in my life. I'd discard her like she did to me all those years ago.

You're repeating yourself

Shut the fuck up

My dragon could communicate with me, but usually it was just a hassle.

I headed off to bed with new plans formulating in mind. I smiled as I covered myself in soft, silk blankets. Things might just work out okay.In the morning, I headed off with Rave to the dining room, where everybody was eating. Or waiting to eat. They would start when I started. I sat down in my seat and scanned the room... for no particular reason, of course. I wasn't looking for a certain soul-crushing monster or anything.

Why are you obsessed with the word monster

Shit. Why did I invite so many people? But if I hadn't, Zee might not have been invited and I would've always thought she had died.

"Who ya lookin' for?" Rave whispered in my ear playfully.

"Don't do that while I'm thinking!" I said with a huff.

"Do what?"

"Sneak up on me!"

"Did I scare you?"

"No, it just distracted me..."

"From the person you're looking for?" Rave asked with a grin on his face. I sighed and started to eat. The clattering of silverware clattered around me soon after, and then whispers broke the silence.

"If you're looking for the girl that made the commotion yesterday, she's sitting at the third table on the left," Rave said nonchalantly. I whipped my head to the left, but didn't see her.

Rave leaned in right next to me.

"So you're looking for the girl from yesterday. How come? Got a crush?" Rave asked, chattering away.

"No. Shut up."

"That's exactly what somebody with a crush would say."

"Also what somebody without a crush would say," I shot back. He furrowed his brow before huffing.

"Touche." I went back to searching the room.

No, no, no, no. Yes? Nevermind. No, no, no.

"Found your crush," Rave said, nodding to a table to our right. She was sitting next to a short haired brunette. Her hair was tucked in a bun, like yesterday. It hid her silvery tips that I'd always loved. I was glad I couldn't see them. It would just make that fond memory turn bad, too. The brunette to her left was writing quickly in a sketchbook. Zee looked at it and laughed, looking up at me.

No, not me, past me. I turned to see where she was looking and saw a frozen Rave looking in their direction, too. Jealousy started clouding my vision but I shook my head to clear my mind.

Zee took the sketchbook and wrote in it next. As she wrote, she snickered to herself and had a mischievous look in her eyes. I wanted that fucking book. What was she saying about Rave?

She should be writing about me. We were there for each other for so long. Not only that, but i was a fucking king. Rave was just a guard she didn't know, albeit he was always with me and at a much higher level compared to other guards.

"She's so beautiful," Rave whispered slowly. I clenched my fists to stop from punching him.

"Who?" I said slowly.

"The girl next to her. Brown hair, chocolate colored eyes, heart shaped face of an angel."

None of that described her except for the brown hair.

And the face of an angel

More like a devil.

Oh, the girl she was writing with. "Yeah, yeah," I said, rolling my eyes. At least he was right about it. If I was in danger, he was serious. It was like he turned into a whole different person. Gone was the goofy smile and in its place would be sharp eyes scanning the room for any indication of danger.
