The aftermath of the war with the Dark Lords left a haunting silence in the once-vibrant kingdom. The bodies of fallen enemies and allies alike had been cleared from the battlefield, and the heavy fog of destruction was beginning to lift. But the true battle was not over yet, at least not for Lucifer.
Despite the victorious cries of his people and the celebration of freedom across the lands, Lucifer could feel the lingering weight of the dark magic that had once threatened to consume him. He had fought through the pain, the weakness seeping into his bones from Seraphine's treachery. He had fought because his people needed him, because abandoning them in their hour of need was unthinkable. And with Apex gone, planning for revenge.... planning to set his village free, the load to handle the kingdom was also more.
Now, with the Dark Lords gone, Lucifer was the one in need of healing.
The king sat on the balcony of his chamber, staring out at the horizon. The land that once carried the scars of battle was beginning to heal, much like the people who had been saved. Villagers returned to their homes, their faces filled with cautious hope, but Lucifer's mind was far from the bustling life below.
The door creaked open, and Leo entered, his expression concerned as he approached Lucifer. "You should be resting," Leo said, his voice steady but gentle. "You've barely had time to recover from the final battle."
Lucifer, still pale and visibly weakened, offered a faint smile. "Resting... is not so easy when the weight of the crown never leaves your head."
Leo stood beside him, gazing out at the kingdom. "We won. The Dark Lords are no more. You gave everything in that fight, even when you were nearly destroyed. But now you have to take care of yourself."
Lucifer sighed, rubbing his chest, the place where Seraphine's dark influence had burrowed deep. Even though she was long gone, the effects of her poisonous touch still lingered.
"Seraphine's treachery... the war... it feels like it's still with me," Lucifer admitted, his voice heavy. "I fought through it because I had to. But now that the battle's over, I can feel it eating away at me. I'm not sure how much longer I can go on like this."
Leo knelt beside him, his tone serious but compassionate. "That's why Valyron and I called Kael. We need his help to heal you completely. You may have purged most of the dark magic from your body, but some of it still remains."
Lucifer's brow furrowed. "Kael? I thought he'd gone into hiding after the war."
"He did," Leo replied, "but he's agreed to help. He knows how important it is that you recover fully. The kingdom can't afford to lose you now."
At that moment, Valyron entered the room, his expression grim yet determined. "Kael has agreed to meet us in the sacred grove. We need to perform the final ritual to cleanse the remnants of Seraphine's influence."
Lucifer looked between his two closest allies, the weight of their words sinking in. His people needed a strong leader now more than ever, but the darkness inside him was slowly draining his strength.
"I can't leave the kingdom again," Lucifer said, his voice raw. "They've just begun to rebuild. What will they think if their king vanishes so soon after victory?"
Valyron shook his head. "Lucifer, if you don't heal, there won't be a kingdom left to lead. The damage Seraphine did will kill you if we don't act now."
Lucifer hesitated, his gaze drifting back to the kingdom below. His people had already suffered so much-could he really afford to leave them again, even if it was for his own sake?
Leo placed a hand on his shoulder. "We'll handle things here. I'll take charge in your absence. Valyron and I have planned for this. You just need to trust us."
Lucifer closed his eyes, the exhaustion creeping back into his bones. Trust. It was something he had always struggled with, especially after Seraphine's betrayal. But looking at Leo and Valyron, the two who had fought by his side through everything, he knew they were right.
"Fine," Lucifer finally relented. "But if anything happens to the kingdom in my absence, I'll never forgive myself."
Valyron nodded, satisfied with Lucifer's decision. "We'll leave at dawn. The sooner we begin the ritual, the sooner you'll be restored."
As the conversation continued, a shadow loomed over them. Unseen by anyone in the room, a dark presence stirred, watching and waiting. Though the Dark Lords had been defeated, something far older, far more dangerous, had taken notice of the weakened king.
In the deepest corners of the Nether, Kharon stirred.
---
The ritual began at sunrise, in the sacred grove far from the heart of the kingdom. Kael, the mysterious healer and ally, stood by, guiding the ancient magic that would cleanse Lucifer fully. Valyron and Leo watched from the side, their weapons sheathed but ready, just in case the ritual attracted unwanted attention.
As Kael chanted, the air thickened with power. A swirling vortex of light formed around Lucifer, lifting him off the ground as the ritual took hold. The remnants of Seraphine's dark magic pulsed through him, resisting the cleansing force, but Kael's magic was strong.
"Stay with us, Lucifer," Kael's voice echoed through the grove as the light intensified. "You must fight it. The last vestiges of darkness are clinging to your soul."
Lucifer gritted his teeth, feeling the familiar grip of Seraphine's influence tightening around his chest. But this time, instead of giving in, he pushed back. He could feel the light Kael had summoned, feel the strength returning to his limbs. The poison that had plagued him for so long began to dissolve, piece by piece, until finally, it was gone.
When the light faded, Lucifer collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath. The silence in the grove was deafening as everyone waited to see if the ritual had worked.
Slowly, Lucifer stood, his body weak but no longer weighed down by darkness. He looked at Kael, Leo, and Valyron, a spark of hope in his eyes.
"It's over," Kael said quietly. "You're free."
Lucifer took a deep breath, feeling the air fill his lungs without pain for the first time in what felt like an eternity. He nodded, a small, relieved smile playing on his lips. "Thank you... all of you."
But just as the weight of relief settled over them, a chill ran through the grove. Valyron stiffened, his eyes narrowing as he sensed something wrong. Leo instinctively reached for his weapon, scanning the trees for any sign of danger.
Kael was the first to speak. "We need to leave. Now."
Lucifer looked at him, confused. "What's wrong?"
Kael's face was pale, his voice low and urgent. "There's something else... something far worse than the Dark Lords."
In the distance, the wind began to howl, carrying with it a whisper, a name.
Kharon!
