After discovering his true heritage as a Celestial Dragon, Xanxus D. Inferno rejected the life of privilege and escaped the clutches of the World Nobles. Fueled by rage and a burning hatred for the corrupt system, he decided to carve out his own path as a pirate, determined to amass a crew strong enough to one day topple the Celestial Dragons and challenge the World Government itself.
However, the world outside Mary Geoise is unforgiving. His first few months in the Grand Line were brutal—surviving ambushes, running into the Marines, and constantly fending off powerful pirate crews. In these early trials, Xanxus learnt that brute strength alone isn't enough. He needed people as ruthless and deadly as himself.

After narrowly escaping Marine pursuit, Xanxus landed on an island where bloodthirsty pirates and bounty hunters would gather for brutal gladiatorial tournaments. Here, he heard of a man named Squalo, who had gained a reputation as an undefeated swordsman, killing hundreds of challengers in the ring.

Curious, Xanxus attended the tournament. Squalo, with his Shark-Shark Fruit, was a terrifying force, able to take on the most fearsome warriors and devour them both in skill and ferocity. Instead of challenging Squalo directly, Xanxus waited until Squalo's bloodlust was sated and approached him after the fights.
"Why waste your time on weaklings?" Xanxus asked him. "Join me, and we'll carve up the strongest in the world."
Squalo, intrigued by the promise of greater challenges and the chance to rise above the mere sport of killing, agrees. From that moment on, Squalo became the first member of Xanxus's elite crew.

Xanxus next came across Belphegor, a sadistic assassin and exiled prince, in a kingdom embroiled in civil war. Belphegor, hired by both sides of the conflict, killed indiscriminately, using his wire-based knives to slaughter rebels and royals alike for his own amusement.
