February 15, 1990

Sineáse sat in her car outside the county jail, her heart racing as she tried to gather her thoughts. The past few weeks had been an emotional whirlwind, each visit with Lyle leaving her more confused and hurt. The image of him and Rebecca together haunted her, a painful reminder of the growing distance between them.

She knew she couldn't keep going like this, couldn't keep pretending that everything was fine when it felt like their relationship was unraveling before her eyes. Today, she needed answers. She needed to know if they still had a future together, or if it was time to let go.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped out of the car and made her way inside, her hands shaking as she approached the visiting area. Her heart pounded as she waited for Lyle, a mixture of fear and determination tightening her chest.

When he finally appeared, she felt a wave of conflicting emotions crash over her. He looked exhausted, his face drawn and pale, the strain of the trial and their fractured relationship etched into every line of his features. But there was something else there too—a guardedness, a distance that made her stomach twist with fear.

He sat down, picking up the phone, his eyes flicking to hers with a hesitant smile. "Hey."

"Hey," she replied, her voice trembling. "How are you?"

He shrugged, his shoulders slumping. "I'm okay, I guess. It's been rough."

She nodded, her heart aching. "I know. It's been hard for both of us."

Silence hung between them, heavy and suffocating. She could feel the unspoken words, the questions and doubts that had been building up inside her, pressing against her throat, desperate to be let out.

"Lyle," she began, her voice barely above a whisper. "I need to know... what are we doing? Where do we stand?"

He looked at her, his eyes full of pain and uncertainty. "I don't know, Sineáse. I'm trying to hold on, but everything feels so messed up."

"Do you still want to be with me?" she asked, her heart breaking as the words left her mouth. "Because it feels like I'm losing you, like you're slipping away."

His eyes widened, and he shook his head vehemently. "No, I don't want that. I love you, Sineáse. I love you so much. But I feel like I'm drowning in here, and I don't know how to keep my head above water."

"Then why are you letting her in?" she demanded, her voice trembling with hurt. "Why are you turning to Rebecca instead of me?"

He closed his eyes, his jaw tightening. "I'm not trying to replace you, I swear. It's just... she's been there. She listens. She understands."

"I understand," she whispered, tears filling her eyes. "I've been here, Lyle. I've been fighting for you, for us. But it feels like I'm the one who's being pushed away."

"I don't want to push you away," he said desperately, his voice breaking. "I don't know how to make things right. I feel so lost, and I'm scared of what's going to happen, of what this trial is going to do to us."

"Then let me be there for you," she pleaded, her heart aching. "Don't turn to her. I need to know that we're in this together, that you're not giving up on us."

"I'm not giving up," he insisted, though the doubt lingered in his gaze. "I'm just... I'm trying to survive, Sineáse. I don't know how to do this."

Her tears spilled over, her voice trembling with emotion. "I love you, Lyle. But I can't keep feeling like I'm not enough, like I'm losing you to her."

"You're not losing me," he said, his eyes filled with anguish. "I love you. I love you more than anything."

"Then prove it," she said softly, the words catching in her throat. "You need to make a choice, Lyle. It's me or her. You can't keep doing this to us."

He looked at her, his expression torn, his eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I don't want to hurt you, Sineáse. I never wanted this to happen."

"I know," she whispered, her heart breaking. "But it has happened. And I need to know where we stand. I need to know if I'm enough for you."

He closed his eyes, his face crumpling with pain. "You are enough. You've always been enough. I'm the one who's not enough, who's failing you."

"Then fight for us," she said, her voice fierce with determination. "Don't let her come between us. I need you to be with me, Lyle. Completely."

He nodded, his tears spilling over. "I'll try. I promise I'll try."

Their time ran out, the guard signaling the end of their visit. Sineáse hung up the phone, her heart aching as she stood, watching as Lyle was led away. She felt like she was being torn apart, the pain and uncertainty almost too much to bear.

As she left the jail, her mind was spinning. She wanted to believe that things would get better, that Lyle would choose her, would fight for them. But the fear and doubt gnawed at her, each one louder than the last.

Back in her apartment, she collapsed onto the couch, the tears flowing freely. She felt so lost, so completely overwhelmed. How was she supposed to keep going, to keep believing, when it felt like everything was falling apart?

Her phone buzzed, and she glanced at the screen. It was a message from Craig: How did it go? Are you okay?

She took a deep breath, typing back a quick reply: I don't know. I feel like I'm losing him.

I'm so sorry, Sineáse, he replied almost immediately. I'm here for you, whatever you need.

She wanted to call him, to pour out all her fears and frustrations, but she hesitated. As much as she appreciated Craig's support, this was something she needed to figure out with Lyle.

She stared at her phone, her heart aching with the weight of everything that had been left unsaid. She needed Lyle to fight for them, to choose her, to prove that their love was stronger than the pain and confusion that had been tearing them apart.

But she didn't know if he could do that, didn't know if he was strong enough to let go of Rebecca and focus on what they had.

She closed her eyes, her tears spilling over as she whispered the words she was too afraid to say out loud.

"Please, Lyle. Don't let me go. Don't let us go."

The silence around her was deafening, the fear and uncertainty wrapping around her like a vise. She loved Lyle, but the pain of watching him struggle, of feeling him slip away, was almost too much to bear.

She had to keep believing, had to keep fighting. Because love wasn't just about the good times. It was about standing by each other, even when everything seemed determined to tear them apart.
