March 5, 1990
The heavy door of the county jail slammed shut behind Sineáse, the sound echoing through the cold, sterile hallway. She took a deep breath, her heart pounding as she made her way to the visiting area. This time, she wasn't here to see Lyle. The thought of facing him after their heartbreaking conversation felt like too much to bear.
Instead, she was here to see Erik.
She hadn't spoken to him since the breakup, hadn't even told him what had happened between her and Lyle. But she knew she couldn't avoid it forever. Erik deserved to know the truth, deserved to hear from her why everything had fallen apart.
As she sat down at the visiting booth, her hands shook with a mixture of fear and sadness. Erik had always been kind to her, had always supported her relationship with Lyle. Telling him that it was over, that Lyle had chosen someone else, felt like admitting a failure she wasn't ready to face.
When Erik finally appeared, his face was pale and drawn, the toll of the trial and the media scrutiny evident in every line of his features. But he managed a small, tentative smile as he sat down across from her, picking up the phone.
"Sineáse," he said softly, his eyes filled with concern. "It's good to see you. How are you holding up?"
She swallowed hard, her heart aching. "I've been better."
He frowned, his gaze searching hers. "What happened? I heard something from the guards, rumors that you and Lyle... that you're not together anymore."
Her eyes filled with tears, and she nodded, her voice trembling. "Yeah. We broke up."
Erik's face fell, his expression a mixture of shock and sadness. "What? Why? What happened?"
She took a deep breath, her tears spilling over. "It's Rebecca. Lyle's been leaning on her more and more, and it felt like... like he was slipping away. I tried to hold on, to be there for him, but he kept turning to her. And I couldn't keep doing it, Erik. I couldn't keep watching him choose someone else."
Erik's jaw tightened, his eyes flashing with anger. "That's not fair. You've been there for him, through everything. And he just... he just let you go?"
"I don't think he meant to hurt me," she said softly, her heart breaking all over again. "He's struggling, Erik. He's scared and confused, and I think he just needed someone to hold on to. And Rebecca was there."
"That doesn't make it right," Erik said, his voice shaking with frustration. "You don't just throw someone away because things get hard. You fight. You hold on."
She nodded, her tears falling freely. "I know. But he made his choice. He chose to let me go."
Erik looked at her, his eyes filled with pain and guilt. "I'm so sorry, Sineáse. You didn't deserve that. You've been so good to us, to him."
"I tried," she whispered, her voice breaking. "But it wasn't enough. I wasn't enough."
"That's not true," Erik said fiercely. "Don't ever think that. This isn't your fault. Lyle's the one who messed up, not you."
She closed her eyes, the pain of his words cutting deep. "I just wish things were different. I wish he'd chosen us, chosen to fight for what we had."
"I wish that too," Erik said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "But you can't blame yourself for his choices. You did everything you could."
She took a deep, shuddering breath, her heart aching. "I don't know how to move on, Erik. I loved him so much, and now it feels like... like I'm lost."
"You're not lost," he said gently. "You're hurting, and that's okay. But you're strong, Sineáse. Stronger than you know. And you're going to get through this."
She looked at him, tears blurring her vision. "I feel like I'm falling apart."
Erik's expression softened, his eyes full of compassion. "It's okay to fall apart. But you're going to put yourself back together. You're going to be okay."
She wiped her eyes, her heart aching with gratitude for his words, for his kindness. "Thank you, Erik. I needed to hear that."
"Anytime," he said softly, his voice full of sincerity. "You're family to me, Sineáse. No matter what happens with Lyle, you're always going to be family."
Her tears flowed freely as she listened to him, the words filling the empty, aching spaces in her heart. "Thank you. That means more than you know."
They sat in silence for a few moments, the weight of everything that had happened pressing down on them. Sineáse felt a sense of relief, of catharsis, in finally telling Erik the truth, in letting herself feel the pain of losing Lyle.
"Do you think he'll come around?" she asked softly, her voice trembling. "Do you think he'll realize what he's done?"
Erik sighed, his gaze thoughtful. "I don't know. Lyle's stubborn, and when he's scared, he shuts down. But he loves you, Sineáse. I know he does. Maybe he just needs time to figure things out."
"I hope so," she whispered, her heart aching. "I hope he realizes that we could have made it, that we could have gotten through this together."
"Maybe he will," Erik said gently. "And maybe, when he does, you'll be able to find your way back to each other."
She nodded, though the fear and doubt still lingered. "I don't know if I can go back, Erik. Not after everything."
"And that's okay," he said, his voice steady. "You have to do what's right for you. But don't close yourself off to the possibility of healing, of forgiveness."
She took a deep breath, his words settling into her heart like a balm. "I'll try."
"That's all you can do," Erik said softly, his eyes full of understanding. "Just take it one day at a time."
Their time ran out too quickly, the guard signaling the end of their visit. Sineáse stood, her heart heavy but a little lighter than before. She reached out, her hand resting on the glass between them.
"Thank you, Erik," she said, her voice breaking. "For listening. For understanding."
"Anytime," he said softly, his eyes full of warmth. "Take care of yourself, okay? You deserve to be happy."
"I'll try," she whispered, her heart aching as she turned away, walking out of the visiting area, her tears flowing freely.
As she left the jail, the cold wind whipped through her hair, the tears freezing on her cheeks. She felt a strange mix of emotions—pain, relief, sadness, and a glimmer of hope. Talking to Erik had helped, had given her a sense of closure, of understanding. But the pain of losing Lyle, of watching him choose someone else, was still raw, still a wound that ached with every beat of her heart.
Back in her apartment, she sat on the couch, staring at the empty space where Lyle used to be, the silence around her heavy and suffocating. She felt like she was adrift, like everything she had known and loved was slipping away.
But Erik's words echoed in her mind, a small, steady reminder that she wasn't alone, that she could find a way to heal, to move forward.
She took a deep, shuddering breath, her heart aching but determined. She would get through this. She would find a way to heal, to rebuild herself.
Because love wasn't just about holding on. It was about knowing when to let go, when to protect yourself, when to choose your own happiness.
And no matter how much it hurt, she had to let go of Lyle. At least for now.
