The storm had finally passed, leaving behind a landscape both eerily silent and disturbingly altered. Sodor's valleys and lowlands were waterlogged, the rivers swollen and murky. Broken trees, debris, and thick layers of mud covered the tracks and roads. Despite the devastation, the island felt unnaturally still. The constant wind and rain had been replaced by an almost oppressive quiet, as though the land itself was holding its breath.
But for those of us who had survived the storm, we knew something far worse was looming.
It was the third day after the storm that the sightings began.
At first, it was subtle. Thomas had been running a light engine over the branch line to check for damage. He was nearing the outskirts of the forest near Arlesdale, just past the spot where Murdock, Toby, Duck, and I had discovered the hidden cavern. That's when he noticed them. Standing just beyond the tree line, half-obscured by the dense mist, were several figures.
"They were just... standing there," Thomas told us later that day, his normally confident voice shaken. "I thought it was workmen at first, maybe clearing fallen trees, but... they weren't moving. And they were all dressed in dark, old clothes—like they didn't belong."
When Thomas tried to move closer, the figures melted away into the mist, vanishing as quickly as they had appeared.
By the following afternoon, more sightings had been reported. Emily saw them while running coal trucks to the depot. She had been crossing the viaduct when she noticed the same shadowy figures watching her from below, standing motionless at the edge of the forest. When she tried to shout a greeting, there was no response. Instead, the figures seemed to retreat, their dark forms disappearing among the trees.
And it wasn't just Emily or Thomas. By the end of the week, nearly every engine on the island had reported seeing them—the watchers.
"Who are they?" Percy asked one evening, his usually cheerful face creased with worry. "Why are they just... standing there, watching us?"
No one had an answer. Some engines tried to shrug it off, dismissing it as workmen or shepherds. But those who had seen the figures up close knew better. There was something strange about them—something off.
"They never get close," James remarked, his eyes scanning the mist outside the sheds. "Always at the edge of the forest. Always just... watching."
"Maybe they're ghosts," Henry muttered under his breath, though he quickly regretted saying it. The air in the sheds grew colder, and a heavy silence fell over us.
Emily, who had been quiet up until now, suddenly spoke, her voice low and distant. "They're not ghosts. They're here for a reason. I think they're... guardians."
We all turned to look at her, puzzled. Emily had been different ever since the storm—more withdrawn, almost haunted by something.
"They're watching over us," she continued, her eyes fixed on the mist outside. "They know what's coming. They know about the dark force that's rising on the island."
"Emily, what are you talking about?" Gordon asked, his usual gruff tone softened by genuine concern.
"There's something ancient on this island," Emily said, her voice growing more insistent. "We've all felt it, haven't we? The whispers, the shadows, the strange occurrences. It's all connected. And the watchers—they're here to protect us. Or... maybe they're here to decide our fate."
That night, I couldn't sleep. The watchers, the cavern, the storm—it was all swirling in my mind, painting a picture of something much larger and far more dangerous than we had realized. The ancient carvings we had found in the cavern depicted a great catastrophe, a cataclysmic event that would tear Sodor apart. And now, with these mysterious figures appearing across the island, it felt as though that prophecy was drawing closer to fulfillment.
