Chapter Two

Collision

Auggie's POV

┕━━━━━♥♠♣♦━━━━━┙

August 'Auggie' Ramirez hated being eleven. She hated it when she was ten, and nine, too. The only year she had liked was when she was six and got to update her old bedsheets into Hello Kitty ones. Now she hated those, too.

All she ever wished for on her birthdays was to be eighteen already. Eighteen meant a lot.

Auggie wanted to get away from her parents. She was too scared to do it at eleven, but eighteen meant that she would be brave and smart and strong enough to get away from it all.

She had less than seven years to get there. A small amount compared to all the life she would get to live once she did turn eighteen. She'd be able to get a cat like she always wanted. Get to cook all the food she wanted to try.

But then their apartment burned down, and the Ramirez family had to move.

By some miracle, her father Manny managed to secure a small house in a bad part of town. Neither of her parents really cared that there was no bus route through the area, or that it was now a thirty minute walk from her old school (which they never bothered changing to something closer). Auggie wasn't sure they had even thought about that while moving.

Which was okay. She hated school. The walk was a great excuse as to why she was late or didn't show up. Not that any of her teachers or parents even noticed.

So she'd spend her time in her room, doodling away or playing with some old toys she managed to preserve over the years. When Auggie got really bored, or if her parents were hosting a late night party in their new home, she'd find herself wandering the nearby streets, going deeper and deeper into the treacherous nightscape of LA. It was actually pretty nice despite the rugged area.

She did miss their old apartment though. There, she had a bed instead of sleeping on the floor, and there was a nice neighbor her age that she would play with sometimes. It was a nice apartment. Nicer than anything the family had been in before .

It was 7 AM and Auggie was on her way to school when the next accident to plague her life occurred.

As normal, she waited patiently for the crosswalk sign to flash on over a busy intersection. There were a few other people besides her that she had actually started to recognize since they had the same commute. Two older teens, a businessman, and a delivery driver were there whenever she decided to put in the effort to go to school.
