Chapter 1: The Weight of Dreams
Elara Ashworth sat on the edge of her bed, the thin mattress creaking beneath her. The room was small and cluttered, its walls adorned with fading posters of colleges she longed to attend. She glanced at the clock—just two days until her eighteenth birthday. Freedom was almost within reach, but it felt like a cruel joke. Her heart sank as she thought about her family's plans for her future: none.
Her mother, Selene, was too consumed by the charms of her husband, Henry Dread, to notice Elara's struggles. Henry had two children from his previous marriage, and though they were practically adults, they acted like rulers in their home. Ryan, her 19-year-old stepbrother, hardly acknowledged her existence, while her stepsister, Mia, was the embodiment of entitlement. With her perfectly styled hair and designer clothes, Mia seemed to thrive on the attention of their parents, leaving Elara to clean up after their lavish lives.
"Why do you even bother?" Mia often taunted. "You know you'll never be good enough for this family."
The words echoed in Elara's mind as she stood up to start her chores for the day. She had been doing everything around the house for years, cooking, cleaning, and babysitting Ryan and Mia whenever their parents wanted a night out. Despite her efforts, her family barely acknowledged her. The only comfort she found was in her grandmother, who always believed in her potential. But that support had been snatched away when her grandmother passed last year, leaving Elara feeling more alone than ever.
"Just a little longer," she whispered to herself, clutching a worn-out notebook filled with college applications. She had been saving for her education, working part-time at a local café, dreaming of the day she could escape this suffocating household. But her dreams seemed to evaporate like mist in the morning sun, especially after Mia's cruel betrayal. The realization that her sister had stolen her hard-earned savings shattered Elara's spirit.
"Mia took my money!" Elara had pleaded with her mother last week, desperation thick in her voice. But Selene merely waved her hand dismissively, her mind already drifting to the next vacation. "You need to learn to take care of yourself, Elara. Stop being so dramatic."
Elara had fought back tears, knowing her mother would never understand the pain of watching her own family choose someone else over her. As the weekend approached, the Dreads packed for their trip to the beach—a getaway that would only serve to deepen her isolation. They were leaving her behind, eager to kick her out as soon as she turned eighteen.
That Friday evening, the house was filled with laughter and the sounds of luggage being wheeled out. Elara stood outside, clutching her notebook and a worn-out duffel bag filled with the few belongings she could call her own. The sky was beginning to darken, a storm brewing in the distance, mirroring her tumultuous emotions.
"Mia, please!" she called, desperation lacing her voice as her stepsister emerged from the house, her arms overflowing with shopping bags. "Can't you at least tell Mom to let me stay for a month? I'll find a place—"
"Why would we do that?" Mia scoffed, her laughter ringing hollow. "You're not part of this family. You're just a burden."
Elara felt the weight of those words crash down on her. Just then, her mother appeared behind Mia, arms crossed and expression cold. "We've made our decision, Elara. You need to figure out your life. You're not a child anymore."
As the words sank in, Elara's resolve faltered. "I can't believe you're doing this. Not after everything I've done for you!"
"Everything you've done? More like everything we've done for you!" Henry chimed in, stepping into the conversation. "We're giving you the chance to grow up. You should be thanking us."
Elara's heart raced, anger bubbling beneath the surface. "You don't get it! I wanted to go to college! I wanted a future!"
"Not our problem," Mia sneered, turning to walk away.
And just like that, Elara's dreams felt even more distant. Rain began to fall, a gentle patter that quickly escalated into a downpour. She stood there, drenched and helpless, as her family climbed into the car, laughter fading into the distance. The sound of the door slamming shut echoed in her ears, drowning her in despair.
"Good riddance!" Mia shouted from the window, her mockery cutting deep. "Oh, and by the way, Grandma left you a college fund, but we used it all to buy my bags. Hope you find a nice box to sleep in!"
Elara felt the world spin as the realization hit her like a thunderclap. Her grandmother's love had been twisted into something that only served Mia's shallow desires. Tears streamed down her face, mingling with the rain that poured from the heavens. She sank to the ground, clutching her notebook as if it were a lifeline.
"Why?" she whispered, her voice lost in the storm.
Just then, a luxurious car pulled over beside her. The engine hummed quietly, contrasting sharply with the chaos around her. A man leaned out the window, concern etched on his handsome face. "Are you Elara Ashworth?" he asked, his voice steady amidst the rain.
Elara blinked, momentarily stunned. "Y-yes, I am."
"I've been looking for you." His gaze was piercing, yet kind. "Get in; we need to talk."
With nothing left to lose, Elara hesitated only a moment before scrambling into the car, the weight of her dreams clinging to her like the rain-soaked clothes she wore. As the door closed behind her, she felt an unfamiliar flicker of hope ignite within—a chance to delve into a new life, an ultimate escape from the chains that had bound her for so long.
