In the face of certain doom, it is our choices that define who we truly are. - Jack Vance
Jake breathes deeply through his nose, doing his best to remain as quiet as possible all while praying for food and no zombies. Please and thank you. He feels the heat from Ni-ki's body as the kid sticks close to him in the empty hallway leading to a vending machine near the elevator. They had survived the past month on the food left behind by guests in abandoned rooms and any junk food they've found. None of them have encountered a zombie face-to-face as they listen for any noise that seems out of place and go back to hide themselves till it's gone. The first two weeks were filled with screams echoing throughout the day as people were eaten alive in their rooms or in the hall.
Now, they're hoping for water bottles or any type of beverage in the vending machine down the hall. Indoor plumbing has stopped working, and the power from the generator has fully gone out just as the month of August ends. Jay, for the sake of everyone's sanity, has been marking off the days on a calendar planner they found in room 8020. It makes it seem almost normal, along with the schedule they follow that Jungwon created in the third week. Well, it's more of a list, but all of them follow it like sheep, knowing they'll eventually have to leave the shelter of the hotel.
1. Be dressed in case of spontaneous running when waking up. (Listen well to your surroundings before going out of the room).
2. Shifts of two members or three, head out if the coast is clear to search for supplies. Food, water, medical supplies, etc. (Grab things we can use once we have to leave the hotel itself).
3. Weapons!! Anything that can be used to attack. AVOID ZOMBIES AT ALL COSTS!! AIM FOR THE HEAD! (We still have no idea if movies were even right about that information.)
4. Don't trust anyone you find.
5. Return to the room if you hear any odd sound!!
They all got around to decorating the paper once it was placed on the door of the hotel room. Ni-ki drew the seven animals that Engenes used to represent us online when he woke from his mental repression. Jake had been a mess of tears. The reminder of the many people who are most likely dead isn't helping him stay sane to even look out the window. Sunoo's the only one with the resolve of steel to look outside. He even opened the window at some point in the month before warning the rest of us against it. None of us questioned him about it.
The glazed over look in his eyes was enough.
Jake looks over his shoulder and sees Heeseung hyung standing in front of their open room door, holding a flashlight and a curtain rod that's been split in half. He holds the other end of it. Theoretically, it would best be used in holding any zombies at arms length to give Ni-ki a chance at stabbing the head. A small smile seems to build up on Heeseung hyung’s lips, but it quickly falls into a grimace when a very distant scream breaks the silence. Jake uses every willpower in his body to stop himself from fully flinching. He can't risk dropping his makeshift weapon.
The slightest noise will send everything into disarray. He feels Ni-ki let out a shaky sigh right into the back of his head, making his hair move with the slight air. Jake makes eye contact with their hyung, who gives him a quick nod. The ever present dark bags under his eyes seem to have fully disappeared some time in the past month. It almost feels ironic that the apocalypse is what gave them the chance to sleep more than before. Restless sleep, but it has been enough for their tired bodies. Jake straightens up, tightens his grip on the rod as he faces forward, and renews his walk into the dark hallway being dimly lit by their flashlights.
