the first thing kageyama notices is that he's clumsy. terribly clumsy.

"good morning, everyone," the student says, bowing so quickly and overly respectfully that kageyama got motion sickness just watching. "my name is hinata shoyo. this is my first time at the school but i really wanna be friends with everyone."

he turns around and hastily grabs a piece of chalk from the ledge. kageyama can't tell if hinata took too big of a piece or if his trembling hands made things worse, but it breaks in a humiliating thud. his body jolts. there's an asymmetric mark on the board and pieces of chalk are scattered on the floor.

"sorry," he mouths to the teacher, kneeling down to pick up the mess.

"so confident it makes my eyes bleed." kageyama hears someone from the back of the class sneer.

"everyone gets nervous on their first day," another person responds. "give him a break."

"c'mon," other person stretches the word, arrogance mixed in with his dramatic speech. "the first-period bell will ring and this guy won't finish writing his damn name."

across the room, the teacher gives a reproachful look above kageyama's shoulder. the gossip from the tables ceases, and once again the focus is on hinata.

despite the rough start, his hands are much steadier now. he moves the white chalk across the dark wood of the board with resolute and hurried strokes, as if his hands have a personal vendetta against it. thud, thud, thud. kageyama's disinterested, sleep-deprived mind takes a moment to register the crudely written kanjis.

hinata shoyo. the flying sun. a presumptuous name for someone with such a short stature.

"thank you," he says with another bow, and kageyama wonder how his brain hasn't turned into a slush by now. "please take care of me."

"you can sit," the teacher punctuates.

and that is exactly when the decisive moment arrives.
